Negative Attention
Attention.
It was all Draco had ever wanted.
He'd wanted it from his distant mother when he was little.
He'd wanted it from his harsh father as he grew older.
And he'd wanted it from that beautiful black-haired hero since the moment they'd first locked eyes in Madame Malkin's.
Of course, that wasn't going to happen. His cold exterior, snappy comments, and inability to be the perfect child he tried so hard to become meant that he lost any chance at being admired, having people be proud of him. So he'd settle for negative attention.
Every angry owl from his mother asking what had he done to his life made him burn with the thought of at least she noticed. Every disapproving glance and cold hard smack! from his father sent Draco shaking with the notion that at least he cared enough to punish. And every scathing remark, every punch, every kick, every point lost from a house shot Draco flying with the cheap thrill of negative attention, the knowledge that he'd left his mark on Harry's life.
It wasn't sweet, it wasn't good, and it sure as hell wasn't healthy. But Harry's negative attention was the only thing keeping Draco sane. Of course, perhaps he'd already gone around the bend, falling for Gryffindor's Golden Boy. His 'arch nemesis.'
He was Draco's obsession, his addiction. And he left Draco craving more and more negative attention every damn time.
