She wasn't the prettiest but yet he loved her
When he had seen her for the first time, Howl had thought that she wasn't pretty. She was a common girl, with a green dress and brown hairs; he hated brown hairs as he remembered his own. But now that times flied, and that everything seemed normal – as normal as it could be when he was near – Howl thought that Sophie was the most beautiful woman in all the country, if it wasn't around the world. Maybe not physically, even though he thought that with her short grey hairs, she was really pretty, but mentally, she was.
Sophie was stubborn, and she had annoyed him more than once; she had even managed to scare Calcifer, Michael and himself, especially when she was angry. Yet, even like that, he loved her – he had told her once that she was really pretty when she was angry and the result was a blush and a peaceful day.
Sophie was very patient. Sometimes, Howl wondered why she was still stuck with them, especially the days where she seemed pissed off – he had asked her once if she was on her periods and...He didn't remember whathappened next. She had the patience to bear with him and to do the cleaning every day – because of course, two children, an old woman and a fire demon in the same house could only be devastating.
Sophie was kind-hearted. Every night, she read a story to Michael. Discreetly, Howl leaned against the wall of the young boy's room and, closing his eyes, he listened to her soft voice. He had never told her, but he enjoyed these peaceful moments. During the day, she talked a lot with the Witch of the Waster – or rather, what she had became. He wasn't there to listen to them, but Calcifer had told him once that women chatting were the worst. Howl had laughed a lot, glad to not bear with that. She talked a lot with Calcifer too, but unfortunately, the fire demon didn't share their discussion with him. "Secret talk", he had said...Howl had promised to discover it.
Sophie loved him and it was the most beautiful thing with her, he thought. She was the one who gave him back his heart and hold it with care as if it was porcelain. She also gave him her own heart, confident. He wasn't sure that he would be able to protect it as he had to, but he would try his best. When he had told her that, she had smiled and said that she had faith. She was always there for him, protecting him as a mother protected her children and as a woman protected the man she loved.
Sophie wasn't the prettiest but yet he loved her like that.
