Shock. Shock and disbelief. Both emotions ran through her head, each with their own set of thoughts. What were they going to do? How could this have happened? She couldn't stay on the Enterprise; this was no place for a pregnant woman, much less a baby. They took precautions, what went wrong? She would have to go back to Earth. Trip would stay here; she couldn't ask him to leave Enterprise. Not after all the hard work it took to be the Chief Engineer. How could this have happened?

She must have spoken that last thought aloud as Phlox started in on how no birth control was one hundred percent effective, and with this particular contraceptive there was a one-in-one hundred thousand chance of getting pregnant---. His voice droned on as another emotion came to the front: joy.

Shock, yes; disbelief, yes; but also joy as she began to think about her baby, her and Trip's baby. They would manage, they had their families to help, they would be fine. Optimism started to grow along with joy, until -- -

She realized the doctor was still talking, something about the one-in-one hundred thousand pregnancies with this contraceptive having a one-in-two chance of being ectopic, and he was very sorry, but ---

Shock again. Shock and disbelief; all else gone. Phlox had called Trip to sickbay, but she couldn't speak to tell him. They just held on to each other as Phlox explained to Trip that the fertilized ovum was in her fallopian tube and had to be removed before the tube burst and she hemorrhaged. And it was best that they did it now.

To have had the wonder of a baby for just a few moments and then have it literally ripped from her was almost too much. Trip held her hand as they lost their baby, promising her there would be other children; but back in their cabin they wept for the one that couldn't be.
