The Shepherd, His Wife and the Pups

A shepherd brought home a sheepdog pup so he would have help tending to his flock in the future. On the same day, the shepherd's wife found an orphaned wolf pup while she was picking wildflowers.

The shepherd was outraged and said to his wife, "That rascal will be nothing but trouble to our livelihood!" But despite the man's opinion, the woman decided to keep the wolf pup.

The shepherd allowed the sheepdog to freely roam the couple's home property. The man knew the puppy was bred to protect sheep so he did not bother to train. While the shepherd's wife, kept the wolf pup by her side and she was always teaching and encouraging him.

A season past and after a bad storm, the flock's pen was damaged. The sheep, scared and loose, were scattered along the property.

The shepherd called for his sheepdog to help gather the sheep. But the sheepdog made things worse as the dog began chasing and biting at the sheep, making them disperse even further.

The shepherd's wife whistled for the wolf. And almost instantly the wolf began to circle and bring in the frighten sheep. The wolf remained by the damaged part of the pen to ensure the flock would stay safe in their enclosure.

After the shepherd fixed the pen, he looked at the sheepdog who was still barking and pawing at the flock. Then he turned towards the wolf who was heeled at the wife's side.

"So husband," asked his wife as she proudly stroked the wolf's head, "Please remind me on which animal is the trouble maker to our livelihood?"

"Well-rounded beings are reared not born."
