She knew he was there. She always knew. It was difficult not to notice someone whose life had been so intertwined with hers for so long. Her heart lurched slightly and she blinked away the tears trying to build behind her eyelids.
She wanted nothing more than to go to him and make everything okay. But she couldn't fix it, not this time. What he had called her had cut deeply. She could handle other people calling her nasty things because she had always known that he was always there for her and that had been enough, but what he had called her... the words he had uttered.
They hurt her so much, she hadn't felt this pain in such a long time. In fact not since... not since her sister turned against her. He had comforted her then but who would comfort her now? Who would truly understand how she felt? The tears squeezed themselves through her closed eyelids.
Was everyone she loved destined to leave her? Or worse... was it something she did that drove people away?

One of the girls she was walking with noticed the tears glistening on her cheek and stopped walking.
"Are you okay?" She asked her friend. Lily looked up at her from underneath her eyelashes, still trying in vain to stop the tears.
"I... I'm... I'm not sure."
The friend guided her to a nearby seat.
"Spill," she ordered.
Lily looked down at her hands, they were twisting her robe between them.
"Come on Lily, what's wrong?"

How could she even begin to explain? They disliked him already and if they even began to think that he had hurt her...
But he has hurt you, a little voice in the back of her head commented. Lily tried to ignore it.
"It's nothing I guess."
Her friend frowned. "It's Snape isn't it?"
Lily just stared at her dumbly, acutely aware of more of her friends gathering.
"Come on Lily, we all know what he called you, it was horrible but what else can you expect from a Slytherin?"

There was a murmur of agreement from the small group gathered. Lily noted that they were all very much Gryfindors. James Potter made his way to the front and sat beside her.
"Don't listen to a word sour-grapes-Snape says Lily, we're all here to back you up one hundred percent." He smiled warmly at her.
She still felt cold however. She cared very much about what her friends thought, what Severus had said to her had been hurtful but he wasn't what they thought he was.
"Severus..." She began.
"Was an ass Lily," James cut in. "You don't deserve to be treated like that, not by anyone."

Lily smiled at him. He was right, but that didn't mean he was right about Sev. One day she would fix this she would prove her friend's worth. One day she would make both of them see what she saw in the other, but today, she was allowed to be hurt.

She didn't know that the longer she waited the harder it would get. And nobody told her that her time would be stolen, that Lily herself would be forced to leave someone she loved and in turn make someone else believe that she had forsaken him and left him in the dungeon to rot.

How could she know that going against her nature that one time would lead to so much pain.

So I don't like this as much as Regrets and Predictions so if you haven't already go and read it because this is the companion piece for it.
