This wasn't the first time she'd found herself lying awake at night, unable to sleep, with thoughts of Tim Riggins consuming her restless mind. In the beginning it had been guilt over her illicit affair with Tim that had been the cause of her sleepless nights. The many that had followed had covered a myriad of emotions. Lust, confusion, lust, doubt even despair, until they had both realized that their poor excuse for a relationship had lost whatever life it had ever had. It had been months before he'd taken up with Julie Taylor, at least it had been months since Dillon had found out about it. And the sleepless nights had started all over again. The last one she'd spent thinking of all the ways that she was different to Julie Taylor. Tonight she considered how the town's most unlikely pair had become the town's most loved couple. How Tim Riggins had gone from 'that Riggins boy' to 'that wonderful boy with the coach's daughter'. And most of all, how it was that for all the time Tim had spent pursuing her, being with her, and eventually avoiding her, how had she never seen him truly smile? He'd never smiled at her the way he smiles at Julie. He'd never smiled at anyone, the way he smiles at Julie. So it was with great and unexpected despair that Lyla Garrity realized that she'd never been in the running for Tim's heart, Julie had always owned it. Tim's whole heart and his true smile.

The End...
