Author's Note- This did not happen to me. This story is based on a FML post I read.
Two sixteen wheeled transport trucks flanked Berwald's vehicle on both sides, dwarfing him and his car. The trees and highway barriers in his side vision were replaced with metal walls and bolts. He could only see the road stretching in front of him. To put it shortly, Berwald was in a tense situation.
His eyes flickered to the other blond man in the passenger seat, bent to the side, and leaning his head on the door as he slept. Berwald's stoic visage broke as a small smile lifted his lips. A young child was situated in the back middle seat, legs kicking to a tune in his head. One of the trucks shifted into the third lane. Things were looking better. Berwald eased his tense shoulders and the death grip on the steering wheel.
Suddenly, "Papa, I got to pee."
The wistful smile fell from Berwald's face. He glanced up in the rear view mirror to the boy staring at him with pleading blue eyes. "I can't pull over right now."
"I got to go really bad!"
Tino stirred in the passenger seat, rubbing at his face. "I kind of have to go, too. Is there anywhere you can pull over?"
"Soon," Berwald promised.
Peter complained, "I got to go now!"
Tino coaxed in a gentle tone, "Peter, you waited this long. You can wait a little bit more."
The boy's expression scrunched as he squeezed his legs together. "Ten..."
"Oh, look, there's an outlet over there."
"Nine!"
Both adults exchanged a worried look.
"Eight!"
Tino twisted around in his seat. "Peter, no!"
Peter wiggled in the car seat. "Seven...six!"
Berwald rumbled, "Just wait. I'm turnin' in the exit now."
"Five!"
"We're almost there!" Tino's voice was peaking with rising panic, "Don't you want to go pee-pee in a toilet rather than soiling your shorts?!"
"Four! I can't help it!" The boy squawked. "Three!"
Tino sat back into his seat, fingers drumming on the car door's handle. "Two!" A low rumble of amusement rose from Berwald, earning himself a sharp side glare.
Peter squeezed his eyes shut. "I can't help it!" He repeated. Berwald just pulled into a gas station's parking lot. 'One' never came, so both men thought they made it in time. When Tino released himself from the seat belt, he turned back to unbuckle Peter, and realized they did not.
"I told you I had to go! I gave you a countdown and everything!"
Berwald swung open the door, following a flustered Tino carrying a whining Peter into the store. "How thoughtful."
A.N.- The FML prompt is as follows:
Today, I was on a long road trip with my son. My son said he has to pee, to which I answered he had to wait 'til I can stop the car. He started counting backwards from 10. I couldn't stop in time. FML.
