"Come on, eat up Mei." Jiu said kindly, looking back at her young acquaintance.
"But I'm full! Honestly Jiu, this is my third bowl. I think I've had enough." Mei-Lei said, pushing the bowl across the table. Jiu came over from the sink to add the bowl to the washing .
"Now are you sure? You know I have some jobs for you to do today and I don't want my special girl going hungry." She started cleaning it.
"Yes! I'll be fine!" Mei laughed, getting off of the bench. "What do you want me to do for you?"
Jiu took a list out of her pocket and handed it over to her. "Just some errands, really. Most importantly I'd like you to go down to the market and fetch me some supplies for the house. We're running out of tomatoes and the couple who stay in room four can't live without their tomatoes."
Mei scanned the list. "OK! I'll get to it."
Jiu turned around. "Now Mei, just come home if you feel tired."
Mei sighed and hugged her. "I'm used to work! I'll be back before sunset. Don't worry."
"Alright. Stay safe." Jiu told her.
Mei nodded and ran across the room and up the stairs. She entered a small room with two beds and a wardrobe, on one bed lay a sleeping Fox Raccoon. Mei picked up a pillow and threw it at the animal. "Bandit! You lazy thing, get up! We've got stuff to do!"
Bandit jumped at the impact of the pillow. He stood up on the bed and snarled at Mei.
"Oh, shush. I had to get you up somehow." She picked the pillow back up and put it in its original place. "Come on, we have to go."
Bandit stretched and yawned before hopping off the bed and trotting over to Mei. Giggling at him, she ruffled his red fur. She then ran back down the stairs, snatched her backpack and happily skipped out off the B&B with Bandit close behind her.
Whilst she was walking through the busy markets in Ba sing se, Mei-Lei hummed to herself. She fumbled around in her pocket and checked the list. "Right... Last thing, Bandit. Some tomatoes." She looked around at the stalls before noticing a vegetable stand, ran by a man she knew called Ping. She walked over. "Hey, Ping! You got any tomatoes?"
An old man turned around from behind the counter. "Good afternoon, Mei-Lei. Oh- How's Jiu been lately?"
She chuckled at him, nodding. "She's doing fine. Do you have any tomatoes today?" Mei asked again.
"Isn't she lovely? Do you think I should ask her out for a cup of jasmine tea tomorrow?" He continued, ignoring Mei.
"Dude! Maybe! Do you have my tomatoes or not!?" She frowned.
Ping realised he was ignoring her. He shook his head. "N-no… That lovely young girl with a huge flying arrow animal took the last box of them." He pointed in the direction of a huge flying Bison with a blonde girl feeding him tomatoes.
Mei furrowed her eyebrows. "What?! I needed those!"
Ping stepped back. "Sorry Mei. She got here first, and she said her Bison was hungry."
"But what are we gunna give the couple in room four?!" Mei leaned on the counter madly. Bandit looked up at her, equally as angry.
"We have another shipment coming in tomorrow. Come back then!" Ping suggested, slowly shrinking away from her.
Mei shook her head. "No, I can't! I have to get them for Jiu!"
Ping shrugged his shoulders. "Sorry, I sold them to her."
"Right." Mei hissed, stomping up towards the girl. "Hey! You!"
The girl turned around, surprised. On her shoulder perched a cat bird, flattening her ears after seeing Bandit.
"Yeah, you!" Mei got closer.
The girl stood up from crouching. "Can I help you?" She asked, dusting her top down.
Bandit yapped at her. "Yes! I needed those tomatoes, and your big fat bison just ate the whole box of the last shipment for today!"
The bison roared at the comment, and the girl held his snout comfortingly. "It's ok Hai, don't listen to her," The girl turned back around and stared at Mei. "And I suppose you think you can just insult Hai just because you needed those tomatoes? Listen, my Bison is twice as big as your fox racoon, so he needs them more." The catbird on her back hissed. "Besides, i already payed for them so they're mine."
"No, they weren't for Bandit, they were for a couple in room fou- Never mind who they were for!" Mei snapped.
"Well they're gone now, so just leave us alone. You've upset him." The girl said, stroking his fur.
Mei huffed and gave up. She stormed back over to Ping's stand. She grabbed onto a cabbage and looked him in the eye. "This? Is mine now. To make up for the tomatoes you don't have." She finally declared, shoving it in her bag and waltzing off.
Ping let Mei take the cabbage. He saw the blonde girl walk over to his stand, her Bison following behind.
"I'm sorry about that, i had no idea that girl needed those tomatoes too." She said, stroking the chin of the cat bird.
"It's alright. Mei's a regular, and i know she doesn't hold a grudge for too long." Ping assured.
"Alright. Well thanks for the vegetables. I'll probably come back tomorrow for more." She said, starting to walk away.
"Oh, you've only just arrived here haven't you?" He raised his voice so she could hear.
She stopped and turned around. "Yes, why?"
"Well, i'd stay out of the lower ring. People there will pick on someone like you."
"Like me?" She asked.
"Well, you have two exotic animals. Blonde hair. And you don't have parents with you. The people in the lower ring will most likely try to steal anything from you." Ping told her. "Do you have a place to stay yet?"
"No, i was just about to go and look for one-"
"I recommend the Sweet Palace Inn! The lady who owns it, Jiu, is terribly nice." He said, before remembering that Mei lived there. "But the girl who you argued with also lives the-"
"Alright, thanks!... Ping was it?" She asked, backing away.
"Yes- and might I ask who you are?"
"I'm Yushi," She smiled. "See you tomorrow, thanks for your help!" She grabbed the rope attached to Hai's horns and led him away. She was very uncomfortable meeting new people.
Hai moaned under his breath. He nudged Yushi's back with his nose.
"Hey, I know that Ba Sing Se isn't the most... Adequate of places for your species, and a lot of people stop and stare at us." Yushi said to her Bison, leading him through the busy streets. "But I'm sure the place we're going to will have plenty of room for you somewhere." The animal in her shoulder meowed softly. "Yes, don't worry Suki, we'll definitely find somewhere to stay tonight that's not in a stingy hut. Hopefully this place will be comfortable."
Yushi stopped. "Where even is this place he was talking about, anyway?" She looked past the crowds and the stalls. There was no sign of a 'Sweet Palace'. She turned to her Bison. "I bet you want to stretch those legs, huh? Come on, we'll look for that B&B from the sky."
Mei marched down the street. She couldn't believe she was going home without any tomatoes. She had bought everything else on the list, except those. She shook her head and looked down at Bandit, trotting by her heels. "What am I going to tell Jiu? She'll be the one getting shouted at by that couple because they don't have their bloody tomatoes."
Bandit gave her a sad look and flopped his ears down empathetically.
They both suddenly bolted upright, really surprised as a loud bellow could be heard above them. They both looked up into the sky.
"It's that Bison again!" She exclaimed angrily. They were flying the same way she and bandit were walking. "Let's hope they're leaving Ba Sing Se." She huffed.
A little note from the author:
So! A new story. This time, ATLA and TLOK themed! I love the series, and when i heard that there will probably not be a third i was quite upset XD. Me and my friend decided to start writing a third series spin-off which we hope you will all like!
I hope this first chapter has grabbed your attention; and btw there will be plenty of action to come if you are familiar with my writing, and much more explanation on how there are two avatars instead of one.
See you in a few days for the second update!
