Lady in Black

By Any Unborn Child

(This little fic is based on some events in chapters 140 and 141 – but if things went a little further. May contain spoilers.)

As quickly as it came, it happened.

She had been laying facedown on the bed, her twilight clothing an unfortunate mirror to her uncharacteristically glooming soul.

He had heard her words, as they bounced around in his head…

"Even that very honest gaze…his behavior, his voice…It's just not his face…the way he's the same, the way he just resembles…Every time I find such a way…It's no good…"

These words were unlike her. Usually she was so hopeful, so optimistic.

"Why…isn't Syaoran-kun…the one I see before me now?"

Sakura-chan…

A resonance burned inside of him.

Something was calling. Something had come back. Something that had come seemingly from a deep slumber.

I can hear you…

Something familiar had come once again…but he would not address it now. Maybe later. Sakura needed him now.

The sweet timbre of Sakura's voice brought him back to the present.

"What is it? Is something wrong?"

She must have seen his worried glance.

He smiled to reassure her.

"…Nothing."

Sakura-hime…

It was then that Sakura reached over and touched his lips. Ever so slightly. A little spark went off inside Fai's chest. Her lithe fingers felt so wispy, yet so heavy.

"If you don't want to tell me, you don't have to. But don't smile when you don't want feel like it."

The moment that followed this became one of the most surprising, and yet uplifting moments Fai had ever experienced.

Sakura took her fingers off of Fai's lips, lingering ever so faintly, and all of a sudden, it happened.

Sakura's lips met Fai's. In an innocent kiss.

Fai's delicate blue orbs widened at this. What was she doing? More flares and sparks exploded in his torso.

Her lips were soft and delicate, elusive even. She tasted of cherry blossoms, if they had a taste. Her eyes were also closed, so Fai couldn't see her train of thought through them. Was she sure about this?

Or was she deep in an illusion?

The embers that had been generating in Fai suddenly went off.

He reached his hands over to Sakura's face, and deepened the kiss. He closed his eyes as well.

He didn't know exactly why he was doing this.

Was he inadvertently helping Sakura's illusion? Was he trying to fulfill one of his own? It wasn't clear. Everything as of then was opaque. Very, very opaque.

He hadn't had his first kiss yet. He was pretty sure she hadn't, either.

Did it have to end? Could they stay in their bonded illusions forever? The illusions that their worries would be silenced, that they would remain in momentary peace of mind forever?

Sadly, they could not.

The illusion would not last long.

There didn't seem to be anything to gain from the kiss. No inherent hunger, no desire to ravage, no wanton thrills, nothing superficial. It was just a kiss between two very lonely individuals.

Just a kiss.

And nothing more.

After a few moments of this, Fai managed to open his eyes, and awaken from the self-induced fantasy. He broke away just as Sakura began to open her eyes as well. She looked so unsure, so frail under Fai's gaze.

He took her hand between his two hands. He took a breath, and he said,

"Then…I wish for you to be doing the same when you're with me, Sakura-chan."
