I look down at our joined hands as we walk together into war. I've always loved his soft fur's gentle touch against my cold flesh, and even now it brings a small, sad smile from me. I remember the first time I looked at the size of his massive hand holding mine, the first time I admitted to him how I wondered, and still do sometimes, how somebody with as much power, strength, and intelligence could ever love little, old me. He told me then, and he's told me many times since, that his mind and body may be huge, but my heart is the biggest he's ever known and he loves me for me.

My heart's hammering now, and I know, from the way his ears are twitching, that he hears my fear. I'm not ashamed of it; he's every bit as afraid. Yet my thoughts break off as I hear his purr. I look up, surprised, into his big, blue eyes. The world could be coming to an end all around us, and yet he's smiling at me, his beautiful eyes twinkling with love.

"It's okay," I hear him whisper. "It's all going to be okay, Robert," and I know it will. No matter what comes, we're going to best it together and walk out on the opposite side of this fight, and all the others that will follow, as winners. Even if Death comes our way, we're still going to be together, side by side, as we belong, forever.

I nod and force my trademark grin to break out. "Let's kick their butts in a hurry, Hank, so I can get you back to my bed." My reward is there in the marvelous, amused twinkle of his loving, blue eyes, and then the fight is on.

War is all around us, but love protects us. We will win. We will be together! I'd like to call out to him how much I love him, but our enemies and friends alike would hold that against us. Yet I realize, too, as he presses his back against mine, that I don't need to tell him. He already knows, just as I know that he loves me, and nothing will ever stop us or our love!

When the fight's finally over, hours later, and our people are walking away, my mind's still wheeling. I'm not yet sure of all the damage that has been done, but I know that everything's still okay for I'm holding to my man's hand and we're walking home as survivors, still and always in love, together.

He draws me into the shadows against his furry, massive bulk the first moment he gets. "See?" he queries, his voice a breathless purr from panting. "I told you we'd be okay."

My smile fills my face. "That's one of the million things I love about you, Hank. You're always right."

"You say that now - "

"And I mean it. I love you!" And I kiss him again and again forever more.

The End
