He came up behind his smiling love as Charles watched their students play. He longed to feel his warm body pressing against his as he leaned against his wheelchair and wrapped his arms around his neck. "It's nice to watch them enjoying this downtime, isn't it, love?"
"Yes." Charles sighed wistfully. "I just wish it could last."
"It can. Come away with me, Charles." He spun his love's chair to face him. "Come away with me." He knelt, opening his hands to him. "We can make our own world! We can give them this happiness and peace every day!"
Charles shook his head and closed his eyes. "I can not, Erik. You know that."
"Why not?"
"You would not want humans in your world. Hiding away from them does not achieve peace; it only delays the inevitable. Besides, I could not ask for my students to leave all the world's humans behind."
"Leave the humans, and leave their hatred. What could be wrong with that?"
"Tell me, my love," Charles asked, gazing into Erik's eyes, "if your parents were still living, would you turn them away from you as well?"
Erik's eyes lowered, and Charles knew he had the answer he'd known would come. He glided closer into his love and grasped his outstretched hands. This time, it was he who wrapped him in his arms. "Thank you, my darling, and when the days come that we can all live together peacefully, I will come away with you then and we'll spend all the rest of our days together!" He sealed his promise with a kiss.
Erik held to him and kept his tears away though he, too, had his answer yet again. His own dreams would never come true, but as long as he had his love, that was all that really mattered!
The End
