[ The Greatest Gift Of All ]
Niles was handed his daughter. There is something so miraculous about holding your child for the first time. He had a lump in his throat and his eyes started to water. Look at that little nose. Those little fingers and nails.
Bundled in a hospital baby blanket, she reached out with her eyes still closed and yawned. His heart melted like ice cream on a hot summer's day. He helped create this little girl that was a true treasure of life; the greatest gift of all. Her eyes opened and she looked at her daddy and his smile grew somehow.
He didn't say anything, but she looked at him as if she was paying close attention to his thoughts. 'My little bundle of joy,' he thought. 'My tiny angel that I will live for each one of your smiles. You make me feel so big and brave to watch over you. Yet I'm scared to death. God grant me the strength to guide this child. I will be there always for you… no matter what. If you need me, I will spend my last dollar to get where you are and I will spend my last moments on this earth to give my time to you. I have so much to teach you and I will never steer you wrong. So try to listen closely when I share my wisdom with you. Please don't ask me questions that you don't want to know the truth, because I promise to never lie to you. I will do my best to provide you with the tools to get you through life. And if you ever need an organ, I will gladly give it up for you. It's really kind of funny, because you're already pulling at my heart.'
She reached out and took ahold of his finger as if to let him know that she understood.
'Now your mother is resting,' he thought as he looked into her beautiful ocean-blue eyes. 'She's awfully tired, but I know she wants to see you. She's just been through a lot. But don't be afraid, she'll love you just as much as I do. Now, always remember that you can talk to me about anything. Don't ever be afraid to, because we all make mistakes. Whatever you want to be or have strong beliefs in, I will always back you. And just one last thing. If you ever decide that you want to be a daddy's girl, I'll support that too.'
