"Happy birthday!" Harry and Ron shouted when they saw her come down the stairs. Hermione smiled, happy she'd found such good friends early in her Hogwarts career. "Here are our gifts", Harry smiled and both boys raised their hands. They each held a colorful package. Ron's was orange and large. Yellow dots on the wrapping paper made it look like it had the measles. Hermione smiled at the sick wrapping paper and looked at the other gift. Harry's was smaller and wrapped in purple paper. A giant bow adorned the present.

She took Harry's gift in her hands and carefully removed the lint and tape that held the wrapping paper together. In it were three rings and a weird shaped piece of wood connected with strings. "What's it?" the girl asked, not seeing what it could possibly be.

"It's a brain game", Harry smiled, "it's a puzzle you have to solve. There's a book with how the result looks like". Harry had expected the question. He'd found the thing in a muggle shop and had been sceptical himself, but once the vendor had explained how the game worked he'd thought it to be a perfect gift for Hermione.

Hermione looked in the package and saw the tiny book she hadn't seen before. The Gryffindor browsed through it and smiled at Harry: "Thank you!" she hugged him.

Ron's gift was heavier and Hermione knew from the shape what it would be. "A book!" Hermione squealed when she'd unwrapped the present. It was about potions, a subject she'd been wanting to explore more.

Her friend smiled goofily: "I didn't really know what you wanted so I thought I'd go with something I'd be sure you'd like".

"I love it", she hugged Ron, "I love both gifts!".

The next weeks Hermione spend her free time trying to solve the puzzle Harry'd given her or reading the book she'd gotten from Ron.
