AN: This was written for the Marauders' Competition Era at HPFC. Prompt was Rodolphus Lestrange loses something of value to him. Enjoy!
Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter.
Very few people could say they knew Rodolphus Lestrange. Most said he was quite a mysterious entity. But it wasn't always like that. He used to be a curious child, full of energy. But something happened. Something that sent him into this self-induced isolation. And that something was called Rhiannon Lestrange.
Rhiannon was a well kept secret of the Lestrange family. She was a Squib. Her parents hated her for this, of course, since they were raised to believe that wizards were superior to others. They tried everything in their power to squeeze some magic out of her, but with no success. Needless to say, Rhiannon's parents had no love for her.
Rodolphus, on the other hand, quite liked her. As the future Lord Lestrange, most of his childhood was spent learning what he should already know in Hogwarts. Etiquette lessons, dance lessons, family tree lessons. Now, Rodolphus didn't mind that much, he quite enjoyed learning, it was only the fact he had no one to play with afterwards that bothered him. So Rhiannon was the only option he had left. To be honest, he didn't really mind she had no magic powers, he had known her since her birth and if she entertained him enough, who was he to mind her?
But those years have passed, and it was time for Rodolphus to go to Hogwarts. Naturally, his parents forbade him to tell anyone about Rhiannon, as she would be considered a shame to the family. Not wanting to make two powerful enemies, Rodolphus agreed. He went to Hogwarts, he was sorted to Slytherin, he finally made friends, but he had never really forgotten about his sister. But apparently, she had forgotten about him. She didn't send a single letter to him for ten months.
When it was time for him to return home, he didn't know what to think. Should he be happy for he would see Rhiannon again, or should he be cross with her? That question soon became irrelevant as his parents told him about Rhiannon's untimely death. He couldn't believe it. She was dead? That's why she didn't send any letters. He ran as fast as he could to his room, crying his heart out. His Rhiannon, his sister, his best friend. He would never see her again, talk to her again. Soon enough, his parents gave him a brother in compensation, but he never got as close to him as he was with Rhiannon.
Rodolphus never really got over her death. He lost the spice in life. He had locked his heart and never let it out again. And when it was time for him to die, he embraced it because he knew he would see his only true friend again.
