On Christmas Day 1914 soldiers from the British and German lines met in a spontaneous ceasefire. Well what if Lucas and Maya on Christmas Day 2014 met in a spontaneous ceasefire.

Maya huddled silently in her apartment waiting for the candle to heat the room. She heard a knock at the door and looked through the peephole.

"Lucas, why are you here?" she asks.

"Thought you might need some Christmas spirit." "I have plenty of Christmas spirit,"she says to him. "Well, I'll add to it." Maya opens the door and he walks in.

"Where's your mom?" he asks.

"Working."

"On Christmas?" he asks setting a small gift down.

"If you haven't noticed the heat is off. Bills need to be paid. I might have to drop out of school."

Lucas looks around silently for a few seconds, "Come to my house."

Maya looks at him, "I could never. Riley would never understand."

Lucas smiles, "If she finds out I'll explain."

Lucas hands Maya her coat and they leave together.

It takes about twenty minutes to walk and they finally arrive at Lucas's house.

"Not bad Cowboy," Maya says.

"Come on in. My mom has wanted to see my friends." Maya walks in and the smell of freshly baked cookies hits her softly.

"Right this way," Lucas says putting her hand on her back and guiding her through his house.

"Hey mom, this is Maya." Lucas's mom is about five foot three maybe and she looks to be around forty years old.

"Nice to meet you Maya," his mom says handing her a cookie.

"This is really good," she says taking a bite.

"Thank you."

Lucas leads Maya to a living room off of the side.

"So Cowboy, you took me all the way to your house. What do you want?" Maya asks sitting down in a chair.

"Just a book," he says handing her the gift.

"Well, thank you." Maya unwraps it and it's an art book.

"I hope you like it," Lucas says. His mom walks in with two cups of hot chocolate.

"Make yourself comfortable," she says smiling at Maya and walking off.

"So Lucas, why did you really bring me here?" Maya asks. "Well, I figure, I owe you something." Maya looks at him quizzically,

"What do you mean?"

"You took me in when I first moved here. You deserve to know a little more about me."

Maya sits back," You don't owe me anything." "I want to tell you."

Maya nods slowly.

"My dad when I was little left. He took off and I never saw him again. My mom and I struggled for several years before we met my step dad. We moved to Texas and I loved it there. We lived together for four years and we moved here. That's when I met you guys. I really love all of you. That's why I wanted you to have Christmas."

"But I've always teased you and given you a hard time. Why, especially now?"

"I heard you a few weeks ago tell Riley how bad things really were. I knew it took a lot for you to open up to her about that. We all have our walls. You let yours down just for a few moments and I saw someone I would like to meet," Lucas answers slowly letting his words have effect.

"How would you know if I let my walls down?" Maya says her eyes locking on to Lucas's.

"Those few moments I mentioned? I saw a girl who knew things weren't perfect. Maybe never would be. But she had this look that said, I'm ready to fight whatever life throws me. I admire you Maya. I really do.

At that moment Maya knew that Lucas may not be her boyfriend or even anything close to that. She felt however that maybe they could form a friendship that would last a long long time.

"One day back when I saw seven…."
