Just Toast
The Doctor swore in Gallifreyan. That was the fourth round of toast he had blackened to a crisp. Dumping the ruined breakfast in the bin he glared up at the TARDIS. "I suppose you think this is funny! I have no idea why I haven't installed a decent toaster. THAT will be my next little job."
He sighed, his last 'little job' of 'just improving the ventilation system' had caused him to break the air conditioning in the TARDIS and made the temperature to rise to heat wave standards. Mind you … Rose wandering round for two days in a bikini had been a bit of a silver lining. No! Bad Doctor! None of those thoughts!
The Doctor had decided it would be a good idea to make Rose breakfast in bed for a surprise. Toast, tea and eggs just the way she liked them had been the idea. The tea had been no problem; the Doctor could make tea in his sleep, as he found himself doing on various occasions. The eggs were a bit on the sticky side but tolerable… but the toast! He had thought that toast was supposed to be easy to do. Well the bin full of burnt bread was clearly evidence to the contrary.
A small chuckle from behind him caused him to jump in surprise. Rose was leaning against the kitchen door looking in on the chaos inside. The Doctor looked suitably sheepish. "I was trying to make you breakfast…" he mumbled twisting his feet and concentrating on the floor.
"That's sweet." Rose giggled and hugged him. She plonked herself down at the table and took a tentative forkful of egg. The Doctor watched carefully. Rose made a small face, "Sorry Doctor, but are you sure these are earth eggs?" The Doctor pulled a carton off the side board.
Oops! "Um well, the planet Poosa isn't that far from Earth…. Only about three million light years….." He trailed off.
Rose laughed at took a sip of tea. And put the cup down. "It's stone cold Doctor! How long have you been trying to make toast?"
The Doctor groaned and slunk into the console room while Rose giggled again and reached for the cornflakes.
The next day Rose slipped silently into the Doctors room. The Doctor jolted awake and gazed blearily at Rose as she set a plate and mug down on his side table. The Doctor whimpered and stared down at the perfect tea and the faultless toast. Small silver spheres glittered at him. "You put edible ball bearing on the toast, Rose!"
Rose grinned. "Do you like it?"
The Doctor pulled the duvet over his head and mumbled "…feel like a worm…."
"Well I wasn't sure how you liked your eggs in the morning…"
The Doctors head popped up again, his hair was sticking up even more then usual. "Oh, I like mine with a kiss!"
Rose smiled and leant down to kiss him on the cheek. "Eat up Doctor we've got a long day ahead of us… remember the TARDIS needs a new toaster.
The Doctor insisted it wasn't his fault that the new toaster exploded and set the TARDIS fire sprinklers on. Rose grinned and reached for the cornflakes.
