Beyond All Darkness

A/N: Hullo! There's a bit of a story on the inspiration to this fic. (Feel free to skip ahead….). After spending a significant amount of writers block, I got into my head several ideas for a few song fics. However, each time I went to go write them I found my self struggling with them. I tried over and over but I could never convey the sense of emotion I wanted to. Then finally, while listening to my Les Miserables c.d., something broke through my writers block. Another poem, yes, but it hit me so suddenly I dropped everything else I was doing to write it out. Any how, here are the lines from the song that I believed sparked this poem:
Do you hear the people sing? Lost in the valley of the night? It is a music of a people who are climbing to the light. For the wretched of the earth there is a flame that never dies; even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.

They will live again in freedom in the garden of the Lord. They will walk behind the plow share, they will put away the sword. The chains will be broken and all men will have their reward.

Will you join in our crusade? Who will be strong and stand with me? Somewhere beyond the barricade is there a world you long to see? Do you hear the people sing? Say, do you here the distant drums? It is the future that they bring when tomorrow

comes!

While I'm not quite sure how this song spawned this piece, something inside me felt a huge desire to write it. It takes place after Merry dares to smite the Witch King and falls into shadow. True, Aragorn calls him back but I believe the person Merry would have most wanted to see first is Pippin. So here you go, my ballad of unbridles inspiration:

Beyond All Darkness

Lonliness eats at me like an acid

My vision is forever blinded by fire

Fire, fire, fire….

Deep, deep it burns, to the core of my being

Shadows never lifting, so black I cannot see

Where are you?

My heart cries out and then breaks

Despair closes like a vise

Like two white hands tightening ever more on my throat.

Where are you?

I am lost, oh so lost

Lost in this blackness I can't escape

Lost as the pounding of my own heart

Resounds over and over in my ears

Where are you, oh, where are you?

Take me out of this wretched hole!

Icy fingers grip me

I can feel but cannot see them

They pull me down, down deeper,

Down deeper into whatever abyss

I have been cast into

You are gone, you are gone!

They whisper it into my ear

You are gone, you are taken!

I can hear nothing else but their voices!

Oh please stop! Leave me! Leave me!

The fire has gone, but the blackness remains

It is cold now, so cold.

Only my blind eyes burn

Hot tears cut my frozen cheeks

Come back to me! Where are you?!

I need you….

I love you….

The blackness stings….

Someone….someone calls my name

"Come back," they say. "The shadow has departed."

Is it you?

No…

It could not be, the shadow remains….

A warm hand caresses my cheek

The coldness ebbs away, slowly.

Through the darkness, a shaft of light breaks through

I am called again. I will come. I must see….

Cold hands snatch at me.

I force them away

I must see!

Could it be that the voices are wrong?

I awake….

"Merry!"

Pip….

A/N: Well there you go. I hope you enjoyed! I did want to mention one last thing. The part about the voices telling Merry that Pippin was gone was derived from Eowyn's comment upon her waking. She is surprised and happy to see Eomer and says something about the voices telling her that he had been slain. Since Eowyn and Merry were suffering from the same affliction, I decided that Merry would most likely have had a similar experience.
