News Most Wonderful

It was the middle of the night but I wasn't so deeply asleep that I could not hear the door open as he crept into the room. He was trying his best not to make any noise. I still heard his breathing and the soft creak and jangle of armor. I sat up and smiled at him.
He looked a little sheepish but did not hesitate to come over and press a tender kiss to my brow. His hands came up to cradle my face, the rough pad of his thumb gently rubbing circles on my cheek. He whispered about how much he had missed me. He moved back to remove his armor and I followed, trying not to shiver as I left the warmth of the bedcovers.
I brushed his hands away from the straps. It was our ritual. If I were awake and available when he returned from battle, I would remove his armor and inspect him for myself. My husband was quite terrible about dismissing injuries as minor until the healers sat on him. Besides, I had news to share and I wanted to make sure he wasn't the least bit distracted.
Fortunately, he was more than hale. I ran my hands over him just to be certain. My husband grinned roguishly and flexed when my fingertips were running over his biceps. I giggled and he clasped me in his arms then gave me a passionate kiss. He brushed his lips over mine then nuzzled my cheek, still holding me securely in his arms. "I missed being able to hold you, my love."
"And I missed you." I kissed him then whispered into his ear, "I am with child."
He drew back, staring at me in wonder. "You are?" He stepped back a little more, releasing me from his embrace as his gaze fell to my stomach. I wasn't far enough along to be showing other than the fact that I was a bit thicker in the middle. "When?"
"Winter. I am into the second month now."
My husband dropped to his knees and gently rested one hand against my stomach. "Winter… Our child." The way his eyes shone with emotion nearly had me in tears. I relished his wonder and his excitement as he placed his other hand on my stomach. "Our child. Praise Aslan, our child." His hands gently curled around my waist and guided me a little closer so he could press a kiss to my stomach.
I knew him. I knew he would be the most doting of fathers. He looked up at me then surged to his feet. He wrapped his arms around me. I smiled. This was more than worth the last few weeks of constant queasiness. "Our child."
My husband clasped me close, lifting me off the ground as he hid his face against my hair. "Our child." The child we had been praying for was growing in my womb. My husband abruptly pulled back then set me down as gently as he could. "You must rest. Our little one will need you to be well rested. Did I hurt you or the child? I should not have held you so tightly."
Giggling, I could only shake my head as I tried to reassure him that neither the baby nor I would break just because of a hug and kiss. I finally coaxed him into coming to bed. Curling into his warmth, I kissed his nose. "I love you."
He tenderly kissed my brow. "And I love you." His hand once again rested against my stomach as he added, "And our child. Now go to sleep, Wife. You must keep up your strength for our little one." I closed my eyes as I listened to his steady heartbeat. And if I happened to wake once or twice before dawn to find my beloved murmuring to the child in my womb about Aslan and how the two of us cannot wait to hold our little one, well, that is between the three of us.
