Reasons
By that belle

A/N: This is originally a drabble I did for karma73 on livejournal. I decided to post it here with my other works. And here are the criteria:

Fandom: NCIS
Pairing/s: Tony/Ziva
A quote that HAS to be used: "Nothing is inevitable."

They say, everything happens for a reason. That nothing is inevitable. Ziva David never really believed that. She always thought that whatever happened, happened. That there was no 'reason' behind it.

So what was the explanation for her falling in love with her partner of almost three years, Anthony DiNozzo? She didn't think there was a 'reason', and yet she couldn't put her head around it.

Why?

How?

When?

Questions like these floated around her head. She was confused. Ever since she had been assigned to Special Agent Gibbs' team nearly three years ago, following the death of Special Agent Todd, she had worked alongside Tony. They had come to know each other, they had come to work well together.

Ziva had been jealous and worried when Tony started dating Jeanne after Gibbs quit - maybe that was when it had started? - and she knew he had some jealousy about Roy, and the occasional man who had tried to talk her up.

But she watched Tony as Jeanne left the Interrogation Room, and she put a hand on his shoulder. "Go and tell her what she needs to hear."

He looked at her, a strange, unreadable look in his eyes, before walking over to where Jeanne stood by the elevator. Ziva felt her jealousy coming out again, so she turned away. Whatever it was that Tony was going to say to Jeanne didn't matter to her, anyway.

He came over a couple of minutes later. "She wished she had never met me." He said, chuckling and running a hand through his hair. "I thought I was over her, but hearing that opened all my wounds again." He admitted.

She offered him a small smile, and put a hand on his shoulder. "I am sorry, Tony. If there is anything-"

"There isn't." He said firmly. Noting the hurt expression on her face, he added, "But thanks, Ziva.", and was relieved when she smiled.

He turned around and walked away whistling, his hands in his pockets, leaving Ziva standing alone in the squad room. "Nothing is inevitable." She told herself. "Everything happens for a reason."

Maybe she believed that things happened for a reason, after all.
