Title: Despite Her Prayers

Rating: G

Summary: Not being able to be what she wanted with Richard wouldn't change, despite her prayers.

Spoilers: None that I can think of…but you can flame me if that isn't true

A short character study of my favorite character, Kahlan; if I had to give a timeline I would say sometime after 'Listener' but no real spoilers for any episodes

If there was one thing Kahlan had learned in her short journey with Richard Cypher, it was that he was idealistic and somewhat foolish. Not that it was an entirely bad quality for the Seeker to possess, if you don't know your limits as the saying goes…Didn't make it any less exasperating. She felt a small smile curl her lips as she continued to study this odd man.

Richard always stopped to help those in need, at the expense of completing their true task. His ever-present sense of honor and refusal to take the broad view of a situation made it hard for her to keep him alive.

However, it would perhaps be fairer to say that both Zed and Richard were like that. It was somewhat unsurprising as they were kin. On the other hand, Zed was a wizard and wizards trained themselves to take the long view of all situations. Therefore, she couldn't quite figure out why Zed always encouraged these little side quests.

And the spirits damn her for finding it, and him, attractive. It was not part of this undertaking, she was to protect and guide the Seeker – not form romantic attachments to him.

She studied him as he sauntered, and he was sauntering, ahead of Zed and herself. Handsome, caring, and at times heart wrenchingly gentle…everything any sane woman would want in a husband and father for her children. She felt her lips twitch is a humorless ghost of a smile. It was useless to wish for something that would never come to pass.

Her eyes slid to Zed. It really wasn't fair that Zed could not acknowledge Richard as he wished to. They were so very different in most things, but this was one burden they shared. She and Zed had disparate reasons, but neither of them could have the relationship they each wanted with Richard.

She let her gaze fall where it automatically did most times, back to Richard. She forced her gaze upward, slightly above his head. She had to find a way around this attraction, this desire or she would be useless at best and dangerous at worst to this man. Not being able to be what she wanted with Richard wouldn't change, despite her prayers.
