It was a typical November night, cold and quiet, the rain gently tapping against the window is the only noise filling the air. I was getting ready for bed, I looked out the window, staring blankly at the sky, as a bright ball of light falling from the sky. It disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared, as it dipped below the horizon, a different kind of light filled the air, this was an explosion.
'What the hell was that?' my body shook with adrenaline, all at once, lights started going out. I tore my eyes away from the window, looking at my bedroom door, I walked out, I walked all over my home, looking in every room, closet, and corner, no sign of my family anywhere.
'where are they?' I looked out into the garage, the car was still there, exactly where my dad parked it when he got home from work. I wandered back to the living room, my heart racing and my mind mush, I tried to turn on the TV, nothing, I walked back to my room and picked up my phone, no Internet connection. 'of course' I thought, dropping my phone on my bed. I laid own on my bed, sighing irritatedly and stared at the ceiling, blinking tiredly.
I awoke with a start, quickly getting out of bed, running my fingers through my dyed black hair, I walked over to the window and stared out, the neighborhood was quiet, almost too quiet.
'Where are the playing children? The dog walkers? the cars?' my mind wondered to the worst possible scenario, 'They're gone' I stood stark still, my breath hitched in my throat, 'I should get out of here, I have family in Kansas, I'll go there!' I grabbed a duffel bag from my closet and packed clothes for at least two days, my phone, a couple of maps and some money. I got dressed quickly, throwing on jeans, a black t shirt and jacket, and my favorite shoes, my army green converse. I then ran to the kitchen packed food and water to last me a couple days. Went to the bath room and grabbed the first aid kit. Once I felt ready, I locked all the doors to my house, took my dads car keys, walked out to his car and drove off, Kansas-bound.
