WELL HELLO THERE MY FRIENDS! Yeah, I just randomly thought this up one night and decided to post it after fixing a few things. I hope it's okay.
Puzzle Piece
Professor Utonium awoke on Saturday morning and checked the time. It was six o'clock in the morning, the time he wanted to get up. Even though he was excited, he had always been dreading this day. It showed in the way he walked as he took out several wrapped boxes from his cupboard. He slowly opened the door and poked his head into the hallway. Making sure the coast was clear, he tip-toed to a room two doors down from his.
"Ouch!" The professor quickly covered his mouth to stop himself from creating more noise. The armful of presents dropped to the floor, making a loud noise on his stubbed toe.
"Professor?"
Bubbles' hair was dishevelled and she was still wearing her nightgown. She wasn't used to waking up so early on the weekend and was rubbing her eyes from weariness.
"Yes, Bubbles?" Utonium asked calmly.
"Are those presents?" She pointed to the scattered boxes.
Utonium nodded. "Wake up your sister."
He had to stop himself from making the last word plural. He had been trying to get used to not mentioning the missing Powerpuff too much around the girls. It had only been a couple of weeks since their arch nemesis sent her flying into the ocean. They were all still very sensitive about the topic, and the girls' birthday wasn't helping matters.
He had been so lost in thought that he didn't realise when Bubbles returned to the door with Blossom. Both of them stared at him, then at the presents, and back at him.
"Can we open them, Professor? Can we?" Blossom questioned, attempting to keep her excitement on the down-low.
Utonium smiled. "Yes, but in the living room."
A burst of pink and blue light rushed past him and down the stairs. The presents were right in front, in their arms. A second later, wrapping paper was everywhere and boxes were being unfolded.
"More Chinese books!"
"A girl octopus for Octi!"
"Chocolates!"
"A bunnies and squirrels poster!"
Utonium chuckled at the two sisters. The look on their faces made his heart swell with happiness, but hurt as well. There was a missing piece to the puzzle, and he knew exactly what it was. He gazed at the neatly covered boxes he had carried down. Blossom and Bubbles hadn't picked them up, knowing right from the beginning they weren't theirs.
He looked away and saw the girls eyeing the gifts too. A moment of silence passed before Bubbles broke it.
"I miss Buttercup."
I know, I know, it's short. I don't think I really conveyed the feeling well enough. And I called the Professor Utonium because it was the easiest one.
