Dusk to Dawn
"Shooter!" Kate screamed, dropping her shotgun and diving in front of Gibbs just as the shot was fired. The bullet hit with immense impact and Kate was knocked to the ground. She dropped to the ground, motionless, in too much pain to move.
"KATE!" yelled Gibbs. He ran over to her, and knelt down, putting two fingers on her neck; checking for a pulse.
He and Tony unzipped Kate's jacket and ripped the shirt underneath only to find the bullet embedded smoothly in the flak-vest she was wearing. A few moments later, her eyes flickered, and she slowly opened them. She blinked repeatedly, shook her head rapidly, and glanced upwards to see Tony and Gibbs kneeling over her. Gibbs breathed a sigh of relief; it was clearly visible in his eyes.
"You ok?" Tony asked concerned, equally as concerned.
"Ooowww." Kate moaned. "I just got shot point-blank range DiNozzo…what do you think?" She winced as they helped her up gently to her feet. She immediately doubled over, clenching her midsection, and blew out a heavy sigh.
"So I guess this means that you won't be going to Pilate's class tomorrow?" DiNozzo smirked.
She looked at him closely and tossed her hair back. She narrowed her eyes at him, and squatted down to pick up her sig-sauer, which she replaced in her side holster.
"Protection detail is over, Kate" Gibbs said putting his earpiece back into his right ear so that he could contact McGee.
"You did good" Tony nodded to Kate, winking. She frowned at him, expecting some usual sexual-oriented wisecrack. When it didn't come, she returned the smile but didn't say anything.
"For once…. DiNozzo's right…" Gibbs smirked as he loosened proceeded to loosen Kate's flak-vest. Gibbs rarely made personal gestures, so she smiled, shocked. When he went out of his way to do something nice it was always a pleasant surprise.
"Wow!" Kate laughed "I thought I would die before I ever hea…." Her words were cut short. There was a crack that sounded like a whip that resounded through the air. In an instant, Tony hit Kate, who in turn hit Gibbs, and in a matter of a second, they were all sprawled on the ground. Kate on top of Gibbs, and Tony next to both of them.
"What the hell was that?!" Gibbs cursed from under Kate. He put his hand on her shoulder and shook her. She didn't move.
"Kate….Kate…KATE!" He shook her shoulder, but still no reaction.
"DiNozzo! Get Kate so we can get out of here!" Since no one was responding, Gibbs shifted his weight and slowly, inch by inch, he managed to crawl out from under Kate. Once he regained his footing, he staggered backwards slightly and rubbed his head.
He muttered under his breath as he removed his hand from his head and saw a trickle of blood where is slammed his head. Meanwhile, Kate had begun to stir in the corner of his eye. She used her right hand to hoist herself to an upright position and brush herself off. She starred down at Tony who was still lying facedown on the pavement.
She lightly kicked him in the ribs "DiNozzo, stop being dramatic and get….." her words trailed off as a stream of blood became visible from underneath his motionless torso.
