The war had ended.

Julia was dead.

Huber was exiled.

Aldebert had defected.

Stoffel had been asked to return to his own castle.

And Conrad had been gone for over six months. Ulrike had explained his absence as an important mission from the Shinou, but as far as Wolfram was concerned he was just another unreliable person who had abandoned them when it was time to pick up the pieces. It wasn't like Wolfram really cared where he was or what he was doing.

He was furious whenever anyone would call that man's name. He wouldn't call him brother. He wouldn't let anyone else refer to them as such either. Dorcas had learned that the hard way twice. He was, admittedly, a slow learner.

The maids kept their distance from him in sharp contrast to the way they used to swoon over how blond his hair was and how green his eyes were and how they would sparkle in the light and other such things he would hear them saying as he passed. He was glad for the change and embraced his newfound disposition.

He wasn't too angry. There was just too much to be angry about! He could hardly be blamed for that.

There were too many useless people and it was a good thing that Conrad was gone. He was just one less useless person even if he was good with a sword. There were other soldiers. None were quite as skilled, but it hardly mattered. That man was just a half breed after all, hardly worth wasting the energy it took to consider the matter.

Things had changed since the war. Many people had been lost. So, Wolfram had assumed tasks well beneath this station as prince of Shin Makoku. That's the only reason he worried about the blue flowers in the garden. They just needed a little more care than the others. All that meant was that they were weak. They were just stupid, needy flowers that needed a little more of his attention.

And that was the only reason you could find him in the garden watching those particular flowers since Conrad had been gone. It wasn't like he missed him.
