Say you love me one last time

Plot: The call goes straight to voicemail- "Hello, you've reached the phone of Makoto Tachibana. I'm sorry I can't take your call right now, but leave me a message and I'll call back without fail."

Haru burrows himself further into the duvet, breathing in as hard as he can. Clenching the dark blue sheets, he ignores the blaring of his doorbell. He ignores it all too easily. There's a distinct ringing in his ears, but he passes that off as the phone in the hall. He hears the voices outside his door, all concern and worry.

But he hasn't got the time for that.

There's only one thing on his mind- only one thing he wants to hear. Pressing his mobile against his ear, his finger shakily pushes the button again.

He lets it ring once.

Twice.

Third time's the charm- he hears that familiar beep, and his breath hitches.

"Hello, you've reached the phone of Makoto Tachibana. I'm sorry I can't take your call right now, but leave me a message and I'll call back without fail."

There's another beep, and Haru hangs up.

And then re-dials it again.

And again.

And again.

A good two hours pass, and it's dark outside. The rapping has stopped, but the home phone is still going.

Haru presses the key once more- only because his battery is running out.

"Hello, you've reached the phone of Makoto Tachibana. I'm sorry I can't take your call right now, but leave me a message and I'll call back without fail."

Haru's voice is hoarse.

"Makoto. I miss you. Call me back."

"Please." He adds as an afterthought. Anything to hear his lover's voice. Just once more. One more time. The tears slip, unbidden into his-their sheets. The warm scent of the other still lingers, like it was just used.

Haru's voice cracks.

"I love you Makoto."

He can't hold it back anymore. A sob wracks his slim form for some time. It's a while before the hiccups cease. But the tears don't stop. He can still hear it, Makoto's voice. It's soothing him, shushing his cries, causing his heart to ache.

So he sleeps, just to hear it once more.

"I love you too, Haru."
