A Day at the Beach

It was strange for Kairi to see Sora look thoughtful. Sora was just sitting on the beach, staring at the horizon. The bright afternoon sunlight made it hard to see his expression, but as she sat down next to him, he seemed downright philosophical. His eyes flicked towards her as she settled down, but said nothing. No perky smile and hello acknowledged her coming.

"You okay?" She was seriously worried. Sora was always grinning, except when he was puzzled, or defending something (like squirrels.)

"Yeah. I was just wondering about what I've missed by staying on this island; what's out there that I haven't seen. The universe is so big, you know?" Sora glanced at her and gave a small smile, reassured by Kairi's understanding look.

"That's more of Riku's thing though, isn't it?"

"He's the one who got me really wondering. He's always going on about the "great unknown" or something silly like that, but I was talking to him earlier and you know what he said?"

"What?" Kairi's knew that something profound was about to be said. Riku did that a lot. She was however, a bit disappointed when the answer came.

"He said, "I just don't know anything, and that irritates me." But that's kinda true about everyone on the island, right? We've all been here forever."

"Sound's like you've been thinking hard."

"Yeah, I have." Sora didn't look like he felt any better for saying what was on his mind.

"But seriously Sora. There's nothing that we can about that, at least for now. Riku's the thinker, not you. Let him worry about the future, okay?" Kairi was relieved to see Sora's trademark grin plastered on his face at last.

"Yeah. Thanks Kairi. Would you tell Mom I'm gonna sleep on the beach tonight? It looks like it's gonna be warm." Kairi smiled. Sora only slept on the beach when he was celebrating something.

"Sure." Peace of mind, she supposed.

That night, Sora had a strange dream about keys, the darkness in people, and the fear in him.
