One month. A full freaking month since the nightmare known as Neku's afterlife ended, and he left the game to regain his life. A life he hadn't rightly appreciated until he died, and was able to add to it.
As weird as it sounds, it's all true. When he first had his miserable existence, he had practically nothing he cared for. He had his values, and CAT's art. Nothing more.
Now that he had his life back, he had friends. What was more, they weren't just any friends. They were HIS friends. They were his family. Friends he made after death that all came back with him in life.
There was Mr. Hanekoma, the odd cafe owner that had a nickname for everyone. He just so happened to also be CAT, the artist Neku respected beyond any living person. Or any dead person, for that matter. A wise man who helped him learn to open up to the world, and the people in it.
There was Daisukenojo Biito, or Beat, as he liked to be called. The skull cap wearing skateboarding delinquent that was his third and final partner in that horrible game that played with people's un-lives. He was hot blooded and hard headed, but a nice guy with a big heart, and a great friend.
Also, there was Raimu Biito, who went by Rhyme. Beat's younger sister who was probably the sweetest person he knew, as well as the most understanding, and held a wisdom beyond her years in the depths of her baby blue eyes. It was hard to imagine sometimes that she was related to Beat.
And Shiki, the first partner he had in the game, and the best friend he would ever have. He was able to talk to her about things he couldn't even talk to Mr. H about, and was the one who helped him to trust. She was a true friend who he was grateful to have, and loved her like his own sister.
But there was one person missing from the seemingly perfect picture that Neku's life had become. His second partner.
Yoshia Kiryu. Joshua. The Composer of the game, a God, and the one that started it all with a fucking bullet that brought Neku's life to an end, and played with him like a stupid doll in his twisted game, just to see if he could save a city that he'd lost faith in, like he had the right to do away with all of it just because HE didn't like what he was seeing, never mind how many lives he ruined and destroyed in the process.
And yet, though Neku couldn't forgive him for ending his life like that...Joshua also had his undying gratitude. If it hadn't been for Joshua, Neku would have continued on as the empty shell of what he could have been, with no one to help make his view a little brighter.
And in the month of his new life, Joshua was nowhere to be seen. Everyday he tried to look for him, or pester Mr. H for information, as he was the one closest to the Composer, yet all his effort was for naught.
But Joshua was a God, right? So maybe, even though Neku couldn't see him, he was still there? Maybe Joshua was still with him.
And so, every night before he went to bed, Neku leaned out of his open window, staring up at the sky in wonder, whispering to a God, though never sure if he was listening.
"Hey, Joshua it s been a while since I've seen you. I-" he paused, the softest of blushes staining his cheeks as he looked down at the object in his hands. "I wanted to say thanks...for the gift." And lightly, he began to caress the angel feather that was once in possession of the Composer himself, as that was his only tie to the man he owed everything to. It was softer than silk to the touch, and he'd almost wept in front of everyone when Mr. H gave it to him that day, telling him where it had come from.
"...But seeing you again would be a better gift."
