Beep…beep…beep…beep…"We're being hailed, Captain."

Janeway nodded, flashing Harry a worried glance, "Onscreen."

Grabbing a mug of coffee, Kathryn sat down in her quarters to begin going over the reports. She picked one up. Tactical, this will be dry she thought. The next was Ops, at least this will be written well. She began reading it, and she began to worry about Harry Kim. A seventh grader could write a better report, though, it's still better than Tom's.

Making up her mind Kathryn headed for Harry's quarters. She rang the bell. No response. She rang it again. No response. "Computer, locate Ensign Harry Kim."

"Ensign Kim is in his quarters."

Kathryn frowned. As she was about to override the door, it slid open. Kathryn took in the appearance of the youngest member of her senior staff. His hair stuck up in all directions, his eyes were bloodshot and swollen, and his cheeks were red. "Harry, what happened?" Kathryn asked gently.

Harry stepped aside to let her in. She stepped inside and watched as he closed and sealed the door. He sank onto the couch, looking down, and she sat down beside him. Several minutes passed. She gently took his chin in her hand and turned his eyes to meet hers. What she found there intensified her worry. Pain and remorse filled them. "Harry?" She asked in the most soft and gentle tone she could.

He held a padd out to her. "My latest letter from Earth."

Dear Harry,

I'm sorry you have to hear this by letter, Harry, I really am. After a long illness, your mother passed away. I truly wish I could say that she felt no pain, but I cannot lie to you, Harry, I have never been able to. I can only hope you don't think less of me. Harry, I'm taking the coward's way out. Your mother's death, that's more than I can handle. I truly am sorry, Harry. I'll watch over you always, just as your mother does. Your mother's last words were, "Tell Harry I love him." I love you too, Harry. I brought you into this world, and I'm sorry I'm leaving you alone in it. I ask you remember me as the man I was, not the coward I have become.

Your loving father

"Harry," Kathryn looked sympathetically at him. Tears were rolling freely down his cheeks.

"They're gone. Both of them. They're really gone." Sobs began to rack his frame.

Kathryn wrapped her arms around him. She held him, and whispered soothingly, "It'll be alright, Harry, we'll help you through this, I promise. It'll be okay," and other such things.

For the first time since he had received that letter, Harry thought that maybe, just maybe, things would be okay.

A/N: Ok, so this was my first attempt at an emotional fic. I know my others should have emotion, but this is the first fic I focused on it. Let me know how I did. Thanks for reading!
