Even as gun shots echoed around him, even as buildings burned next to him, the only thing on his mind was the girl in his arms.
He could only think about the warmth she brought to his heart, the feel of her hands clutching his tattered, slightly bloodied shirt. He could only concentrate on her soft breathing, the way her wispy blonde hair swirled slightly in the dead wind.
He held her close to himself, leaning down to gently press his cheek to her hair.
For once, despite the circumstances, Edward was genuinely happy.
He was alive and content (a little beat up, mind you, but that wasn't important) and Winry, the girl of his dreams, was in his arms.
And for once, she was the only thing on his mind, because Al was alive and safe, and Roy was finally going to put an end to this war. Ed had done his own part of the plan and Winry had been doing hers all along- allowing people to live be being a doctor and giving them new limbs by being a mechanic.
So for now, they had all they should and all they could do, and they could finally have time for each other.
Now they stood in each other's embrace, weak, tired, hungry, and bloodied – in Ed's case – amidst the battle field, the only thing keeping them company being the faraway light of fire in the distance, broken down buildings around them, the night sky above them, and the haunting melody playing from an abandoned radio.
They swayed with the music, spinning so gently that Ed could've sworn that Winry fell asleep for a moment there.
No words were exchanged, each being content to be in the other's presence, to be able to be close to each other, to hold one another.
Edward really had no idea how this war would end – would they win and be able to live freely and happily with Mustang as Fuhrer (as was his life-long dream)? Or would they lose and be executed for going against Fuhrer King Bradley and the Military?
At this point, there was no point in worrying about it; it was far too late for that. Whatever the outcome would be, he would spend his last moments with his forever, knowing he fought for what he believed in, that Winry loved him, and that Al was safe.
Whatever the outcome was, he would be happy because nothing could ruin this moment with her.
And so he held her and she held him as they slowly danced to their bittersweet song, smiling at each other as white fireworks blew up in the dark sky and victorious cries were heard in the distance.
Don't kid yourself
And don't fool yourself
This love is too good to last
And I'm too old to dream
Don't grow up too fast
And don't embrace the past
This life is too good to last
And I'm too young to care
Don't kid yourself
And don't fool yourself
This life could be the last
And we're too young to care
