"Don't worry, Mystic Maya!" Pearls proclaimed cheerfully. "As long as you have your special someone, everything will work out fine!"
"I guess you're right," Maya sighed, adding a silent 'if only'.
Waving goodbye to Pearls, Maya returned to the Wright & Co. Law Offices to see if Phoenix had come to work on time for once. As she had suspected, he wasn't yet there when she arrived.
"You'll never change, will you?" she sighed, letting herself into the building.
About a half hour later, Maya heard a car pull up outside of the office, so she went to see who it was. Stepping outside, she was just in time to see Phoenix step out of Edgeworth's bright red car. As she continued watching, Edgeworth said something to Phoenix, who snapped his head back toward the car. Edgeworth leaned across the front seat, pulling Phoenix down by his tie. Maya blushed a bit as the two shared a kiss before Phoenix turned once more toward the office. Maya didn't see anything further, as she had ducked back into the office so Phoenix wouldn't catch her spying on him.
When Phoenix walked into the office, Maya was busily reorganizing the cushions on the office couch. "Uh, Maya?" Phoenix looked confused. "Is there any particular reason you're doing that? I thought they looked fine the way they were."
"Not really." Maya shrugged, shoving the last cushion into place with an unnecessary amount of force. "Although, it's not like I had anything else to do while you were busy being late," she protested.
"I guess so." Phoenix smiled sheepishly and rubbed the back of his neck. "But then again, I wouldn't be me if I wasn't always late. That's just how I am. You wouldn't want me to change who I am, would you?" he asked.
Still facing away from him, Maya froze with a lump in her throat. She didn't mind his lateness, no, but in all honesty, she did wish sometimes that she could change one thing about him. She knew it would be completely unfair and selfish of her, but she did wish it. But, no. It would never happen. Better that he didn't know.
Swallowing back her tears, she turned to look Phoenix in the eye. "No," she said with finality. "I wouldn't want that at all."
