He sat on his favorite perch in his entire estate, one leg dangling dangerously over the ledge while his other stretched out before him. His eyes that were blue today to fit his mood surveyed his seemingly endless kingdom, and he sighed deeply as he watched his scurrying subjects. The slight wind fluttered his cape, but he was in no mood for a flight as thoughts he tried unsuccessfully to shie away ran rampant through his cunning mind.
As he watched a few of his subjects pause to point up at him, whisper amongst themselves, and then scurry rapidly off, he reflected on the great fear they held for him. They should fear him, he thought with a wry smile, but even on the rare occasion that he did venture out of his lands, he was still met almost always with fear. It was good that others feared him, but sometimes, like today, he longed for a companion to break his solitude. His lands were many and his subjects countless, but he remained lonely in the midst of plenty.
It was not that he had not taken companions over the centuries. He had had many, but none ever remained. Most wanted his position of power, something he often thought he would gladly shove off on any one else if only it were as simple as tossing the reigns to a newcomer. Others simply wanted the rush of excitement and power being with him granted them, and still others only wanted to get inside his tight pants. He sighed deeply as he thought of how he had come to be in this position and how long it had been since he'd thought he could trust any one, since he had even had a true friend.
He wondered how long it would be before he found the right being, one who wasn't too hung up on herself or her baby, and he could leave this haven that had become his own personal Hell. He wondered how long it would be before he found the right one and if that person even existed, one who could share everything he had to offer, love him not for what he offered but for he himself, and be forever at his side, one who would complete him and make him whole. As Jareth pondered, day turned to night, but still there was no answer in the night wind. There never was.
The End
