I have no idea what possessed me to write this, except that maybe I've been indulging in a bit too much historical fiction. I know it's overly drawn out but whatever. Title sucks, will be changed. Yes there will be OOCness and I'll probably be flamed which I don't care about. Of course that'll factor into why I abandon this story as soon as I pick it up.
Usual disclaimer. Nothing belongs to me.
Kill me for not updating anything else. It's the friggin' writers' block and anticipation for college acceptances har de har har.
In the Background
No one knew how exactly Rachel Roth came to be a part of the Graysons' court, but it didn't matter. As shrouded and dark as her history seemed, it was common knowledge that the girl was a sweet and loving child, though emotionally fragile. That could easily be attributed to the fact that she had been left on a doorstep when she was but a wide-eyed two-year-old who knew only her name and nothing more
It didn't matter for the King and Queen though. They took in the girl as though she were one of their own, despite her odd ashen complexion and vibrantly purple hair and eyes. Despite the gossiping amongst the townsfolk about this strange child, they raised her like a daughter to serve as a companion to their only son
The two children grew up the best of friends, closer than siblings could ever be, with a strong emotional bond. Whenever Richard had to go off for training practice, Rachel would be withdrawn and sullen, losing herself in the castle's enormous library to drown in the large novels. When he would finally return at nightfall, sweaty and bone-tired, it was Rachel who took it upon herself to bring him his favorite foods and recite stories to entertain him
The townsfolk would smile and nod when they saw the two frolicking about, the young prince and the orphan girl in their play clothes as they scurried up tall trees and threw crab apples at one another. The two loved to play in the gardens, whether it be in a game of hide-and-seek or tag. They recalled with affection the time they saw Rachel squealing with fear as a large dog menaced her, and a gallant Richard coming to her rescue with a bucket of water
Many agreed that it was this kind of relationship that was best, a relationship of equals and no pretensions. Some predicted that the two would end up together, marry, have kids, and live happily ever after. Others didn't see the two together, but still agreed that they would have a good friendship in the future. Some others felt the two were too close, considering their posts, and that Richard's eventual betrothal to some princess would shatter Rachel. They all knew how distant the girl could be, and with so few true friends, they doubted she'd be able to move on
Whatever they said, didn't matter to the two young children. Life was all about living through each day like it was their last, taking chances and risks, all in the sake of being happy
Their relationship had yet to stand the test of time and tradition, but when it did, there were sure to be challenges.
