Chapter 1
Slipping between the pillars standing in the plaza of the large complex, the green furred hedgehog paused to catch his breath. He didn't have much time, as his similarly tinted friend was close behind.
"Ashura, move it, we don't have time for sightseeing!" He whispered harshly, tugging at Ashura's glove a little more desperately than he would have liked, anxiously glancing back every few seconds towards where he'd come.
Neither hedgehog has anticipated a giant robot patrolling the abandoned mall (as it usually is at 3 A.M.) instead of the usual disgruntled humans wandering the halls. The clank of metal against linoleum set both hedgehogs on a run once again. Ashura was quickly overtaken y his speedier counterpart, who was currently pulling a u-turn and hurling himself towards the robot.
"Stupid!" Ashura gritted his teeth and sprinted back to whence he came, energy crackling at his fingertips. "Manic, what the hell do you think you're doing?" He shouted to the hedgehog currently back flipping to avoid the robot's swipe.
"Attacking the robot? We can't outrun this thing, Ash!"
"You could." Ashura sent a crackling wave of scarlet energy at the robot, which collided with its legs.
Manic ducked another punch, delivering a kick to the robot's metal torso, sending it to the ground. "That's why I said 'we'.'Leave no man behind', you know?" He scooted over to his partner and pulled him along. "But we gotta juice, like, now!"
Ashura merely nodded, and the two sped from their assailant and the local shopping district.
Ashura closed the door unceremoniously behind him. He and Manic had parted ways after sharing the prizes.
"Hey." He dropped the bag on the worn table in the middle of the small kitchen, the various goods clanking inside. When he didn't get a response from the elder hedgehog, he said a little louder, "Hey? I'm back."
"You're late." Sigma said simply, not even turning from the sink he was currently stationed in front of.
"Yeah, well killer robots kinda slow you down a little, you know?" Ashura glared at the table and plucked a pear from the bowl in its center.
"Oh." He responded. Ashura snorted.
"You could at least pretend to care." He growled under his breath.
"Ashura?" A new voice entered the conversation. This one belonged to a blue hedgehog, who approached Ashura.
"Aww, I didn't make you worry, did I, Swifty?" He grinned at the pout, his gaze instantly softening against the girl.
Sara 'Swift' certainly lived up to her name,. One of the quickest on their feet of the group (paralleled by Manic), she was also the softest, and teased often about this fact.
"Oh, stuff it." She poked the taller hedgehog in the midsection, who continued to grin lopsidedly.
"Ya missed all the action, Sar." He continued. "We totally took down this robot-thing."
Sara smacked his forearm. "I thought I told you to be careful! Did you get hurt?"
Ashura rubbed his arm, feigning hurt. "You didn't tell us robots were involved, though! Kind of an important detail to overlook, huh?"
"Sara told you yesterday they were adding robots to night duties in most establishments." The previously silent pale feline inserted his comment.
"Yeesh, Lumine, you look worse than ever." Ashura received glares from both the other parties involved in the conversation, but didn't rescind or expand his comment.
"I am aware." Lumine lowered his head until his excess hair fell over his face once more. "Haven't been sleeping well lately..." He mumbled in conclusion, more to himself than the others.
