I looked at the crumpled note in my hands.
Meet me on top of the GCPD building. 8pm. - Dick
I shook my head as I stood atop the GCPD Building. What the hell did he want? Dick and I used to be so close, we loved each other but that was over now and though he is one of my dearest friends I don't know how to feel about him now. Sometimes I want to punch in the face and other times I genuinely enjoy his company. I think what annoys me the most is he constantly takes the time to check up on me, I feel like he doesn't trust me to look after myself. I know it hasn't been long since I've been out of the wheelchair but I'm a big girl and I can take care of myself.
I feel arms around me and a gentle brushing against my ear. "Happy Birthday Babs" he whispers softly. I turn and smile at him and say "You're late birdboy.". He smiles back and crosses his arms and returns with "I know, but I do get busy being Nightwing and all...".
He pulls a gift from his pocket and hands it to me. "I'm sorry Miss Gordon but I have to leave now, I hope you enjoy your gift." he says with a wink. I roll my eyes before he looks at my sincerely and almost whispers "Please take care of yourself Barbara.".
He disappears into the shadows and that's when I realise something: Dick cares about me. He doesn't chase me because he doesn't trust me but because he values our friendship and he can't stand to see something happen to me. We used to always chase each other like this. He was my first crush and but our friendship... Our friendship was something you couldn't tear apart despite everything we had been through. I was lucky to have him. Sometimes I wish that we could go back to being two kids flirting, where our friendship was at it's strongest and attempt to have a meaningful relationship with him; it will probably only ever be a fantasy.
My fingers slide over the present. I untie the ribbon and peel away the wrapping paper to reveal what was underneath. It was a photo of us as kids. The one from a charity event that Bruce invited me and my father to. I remember the night well, I almost fell from the top of the manor. Dick had invited me up there to show me the view; it was truly beautiful. He jumped over the building like it was nothing and when I tried I almost fell but regardless he was there to catch me.
I walked down the GCPD stairs and into my fathers office. "Barbara!" he exclaimed as I walked in. "What a pleasant surprise to see you, I'm sorry I couldn't get time off to see you". He grabs my hands. "It's okay dad" I say with a grin. "Happy birthday sweetheart" he says to me as he lets go of my hands. He plants a small kiss on my forehead and walks off asking "I have to work, will you be okay walking back to your apartment?". I nod and watch him leave.
After walking home I'm greeted by my roomate. After a small chat about my birthday I go into my room and place the photo of me and Dick next to me. It's comforting to look at, after all Dick Grayson is the man who'll always catch me when I fall.
