"One, two, here, four, five…" Jace counted quietly as he gently removed a strand of hair from my face. He was interrupted by a giant roar of thunder that broke the silence of the empty Institute. It was followed by smaller rumbles, fading into the distance.
The rain drizzled on the window; the outside world was nothing more than blurs beneath a layer of water. All I could smell, could feel, could see was Jace. He grinned at me as he moved to kiss me, his lips moving against mine.
The warmth trapped by the blanket was almost suffocating as I pulled back for air. There was a flash of lightening that illuminated the entire room with white light then faded quickly into black. I blinked at the sudden change.
"One, two, three, four-"BOOM! I jumped as the thunder shook the skies. Jace chuckled and pulled me into his arms, holding me. I rested my head on his shoulder, closing my eyes, feeling safe, protected. "You can face ravener demons but you're scared of thunder?"
"Oh be quiet," I lightly punched his arm. "We all have things we're scared of." There was silence for a moment as he stroked my hair. My eyelids began to close as I started to drift off.
"It's you." He said quietly. He turned his head so that it was tucked in the crook of my neck. He whispered directly in his ear. "I'm scared of you."
"Oh really? I didn't know I was so frightening." I joked. Honestly, I was curious as to why he was frightened of me.
"I'm scared of getting you upset, I'm scared of you leaving me, I'm scared of breaking you. But mostly, I'm scared of losing you." He whispered into my skin. "Losing you is out of my control, I can't do anything about it and I can't get you back. That's what I'm mostly scared of." I chuckled.
"I'm hardly anything to lose Jace, especially for you to worry about."
"You're wrong. I worry about you every day. Every time you go out to Pandemonium or even out shopping with Isabelle, I worry that you won't come back."
"I will Jace, I always will come back to you."
"One two three…" The thunder rumbled and faded as I sighed contently.
"I'm not afraid of losing you Jace, because I've lost you before. I'm not afraid because I know what to do, and I would do anything to get you back, even wish on the angel. What I'm afraid of is the feeling, the feeling of you gone, the fear and the sadness is just…"
I broke off and held him closer to me. "Just come back to me." I whispered.
"One, two-" Another peal of thunder rang out. "The storms close, two miles away. Are you scared?"
"No, not anymore."
There was a loud rumble of thunder as it shook the city. Lightning flashed in brief intervals as it light the city in bright, white light. Rain came pouring in sheets. The irregular, frequent taps on the buildings drowned out all other sound. It was just the storm.
"I love you." I murmured as I kissed him. I wasn't afraid of storms anymore.
