A/N: Hello everyone! This is my first New Girl fic. I hope you all like it!
Disclaimer: I don't own New Girl.
"I still can't believe that you almost did it."
Her voice pulled him from his train of thought and he glanced over to her. Her lips were pressed into a hard line, as if she was trying not to smile, but her eyes were so clearly laughing at him. He tried to glare at her, truly he did, but the sight of her made it impossible. She was wearing one of her "pajama outfits", glasses on, an amused look in her eyes.
He couldn't not smile.
She caved when she saw Nick's smile, and a grin spread across her own face. She walked over to where he sat on the roof and took a seat next to him, glancing up at the stars. "Nice night," she commented. "The perfect night to admit that you were wrong. Again."
"I wasn't wrong," he countered, glaring at her for real this time. "The fact that I didn't go through with moving into that apartment had absolutely nothing to do with Caroline."
Jess studied his face, pursing her lips, before turning her eyes toward the sky again. "Alright. Whatever you say."
"Wipe that damn smirk off your face."
"I don't know what you're talking about, Nicholas."
"Now I remember why I moved out in the first place."
Jess laughed. She leaned back in her seat and pulled her knees to her chest, wrapping her arms around them. Nick watched her, for several minutes, and she didn't notice. Not once did she happen to look over and catch him staring. She just continued to look to the stars, a content smile on her petite face, in her own little Jess world. "Nick?" she finally said after a few minutes.
"Hmm?"
"Why didn't you go through with it?" She turned to him, and it took everything he had to keep from jumping in surprise. He still couldn't believe that after all these months of living with her that those big blue eyes still had such an effect on him. "All kidding aside," Jess added. "If it didn't have anything to do with Caroline, then why did you come back?"
"Do you not want me back?" he joked.
"Of course I do." She rolled her eyes. "It's just that I thought moving in with Caroline would make you happier than you were living here."
Nick dropped his eyes, sighing. "So did I, to be honest," he confessed, shrugging. "I guess I had way too much time and space to think while we were stranded in the middle of no-man's land."
"Plus, you panicked."
"A little, yeah."
She gave a satisfied laugh.
"I realized," Nick went on, "that I was going to miss you guys like crazy. Plain and simple."
Jess' eyes twinkled. "That's really why you came back?"
"Yes. Why did you think I came back?"
"I figured that you were lying and that you just couldn't deal with Crazy Caroline."
"If I can put up with Crazy Jess, and love every minute of it, then I can put up with Caroline." He narrowed his eyes at her. "Besides, she is not that bad."
"You nearly ended up an alcoholic and-" The argument that she had used earlier came to a screeching halt when it suddenly dawned on her. "You love putting up with Crazy Jess?" she shrieked, delighted.
"I was surprised, too." He chuckled. "It wasn't until you saved us from that damn coyote that I realized you were the scarecrow I'd miss most of all."
"Well said, Dorothy."
"Thank you."
A few moments of comfortable silence passed before Nick stood, patting Jess' hands. "Goodnight Jess," he whispered. "And thank you." He walked toward the door.
"For what?" she called after him.
He turned, smiling at her. "Everything."
