Prologue
.
Rain.
It fell onto the soil and grass, breathing life back into the earth it soaked and without a single ray of sunlight being able to shine through the grey clouds that covered the vast sky. The falling droplets of water created a calm atmosphere that engulfed the entire land as people hid from the cold downpour. And then there was the pitter-pattering song that the rain produced when it grew more intense, silencing any other sound.
The weather was the same for a most distinguished tribe that belonged to the Kouka Kingdom, which was known as the Wind Tribe, one of the pillars of strength that served as the backbone of the kingdom. The tribe's capital was Fuuga, where the home of its Chief and General resided, and it was also where a soothing melody came from. The tune was so strong that it managed to spread throughout the city with the help of the rain, as if the drops of water were the source of the soft sound.
The sound came from the humming of a woman who sat on the wooden floors of the veranda, leaning against a beam that supported the roof with a leg that dangled over the edge of the floor with her toes barely touching the wet ground. The woman's pale but fair skin caused her auburn hair to shine brighter as its soft waves cascaded down her right shoulder with fringe covering her forehead and bangs framing her face. Her rosy lips were smiling softly as she watched the rain fall onto the ground with her green-colored eyes.
The woman's attire was a common style in her home, consisting of a low-cut, sleeveless, light blue overcoat with indigo hemlines that was tied closed with a dark blue sash wrapped around her upper waist with the knot and ends resting on the right side of her waist. Under the overcoat, she wore a turquoise dress with long sleeves that were wide, and its skirt reaching her ankles. It was an outfit meant to be comfortable and provide warmth.
Around the crown of her head, she wore an indigo scarf with its ends resting on her left shoulder.
She continued to hum as she enjoyed the evening's solitude. Though the cold had caused her cheeks and ears to become red, she didn't mind it, not even when her body felt so weak and tired. The rain did help lull her and made her feel much better, even though her family told her otherwise. She always looked forward to these times to watch the rain fall, but she still yearned for the drops of water to soak her clothes and cool her body. She almost decided to just dance under the rain, but a small voice coming from behind stopped her.
"Mama!" the giggling voice of the woman's daughter greeted as the child appeared from behind her mother's back.
The mother chuckled as she grabbed her child and lifted her onto her lap to hug the little girl's back to her front, smiling as she placed her chin on top of her daughter's head. "And what are you doing sneaking about, my little princess?"
"Not a princess, Mama," corrected the three-year-old child, her small hands playing with her mother's dainty ones. "Papa be looking for you."
"We can make him wait for a bit longer. I need to tell you something very important," the mother said as she pushed away from the support beam to straighten up with a serious tone and hardened eyes, causing the child to straighten her back in preparation to hear what her mother had to say that seemed important. "Every little girl is a princess."
The child's pale green eyes stared at her mother with interest, her head tilting slightly to the side. "Really, Mama?"
"Yes," the mother said with a nod, her eyes closed as she portrayed an air of wisdom. "Of course, you must be kind and courageous, never faltering in being who you are. Humility and compassion are a given," said the mother, sitting the little girl so that they faced one another. "Many see these qualities as weakness, which is why being strong is also a good thing, but that strength can come from the heart, not just the body."
"That means," the little girl began as she appeared to be in deep thought while staring at the necklace of red beads around her mother's neck, her face frowning in concentration before looking up at her mother with a wide smile, "you a princess!"
"If I am a princess, then so are you," said the mother, grinning down at her smiling child.
The little girl cheered before her attention went to the rain, her eyes brightening as she looked up at the grey clouds and drops of water that continued to fall from the heavens. "Rain Princesses!"
The mother nodded as she hugged her child's front close to her chest, leaning back against the support beam as they both stared at the rain fall. "That we are."
They remained silent for a few moments, both mother and daughter enjoying the rain that made them feel so serene from within.
"You know, it's said that dragons could control water, like making it rain and creating storms," said the mother.
"Really?" the little girl gasped as she cuddled into her mother's chest.
"Yes, this powerful magic was said to come from the yeouiju," the mother explained, her mind going to her memories as a child, listening to her own mother's stories pertaining to such a topic.
"From the story," the small girl said, realizing that the strange word came from a story she liked that her mother narrated to help her sleep every few nights.
The mother hummed in agreement, her cheek on top of her daughter's head. "Yes, from the story."
"Tell me story," the child urged, since she enjoyed how her mother narrated stories.
The mother hummed in thought, not wanting to keep her husband waiting too long. "I can tell you a bit and finish it when I put you to bed. How does that sound?"
The little girl nodded. "Deal."
"Now then," the mother began while stroking her daughter's hair. "Long ago, from the heavens descended the Crimson Dragon God who took a human form, but he didn't do so alone…"
