Wilting Blossom

A/N: Yay! I'm back from my writer's block, but this time here's my first Naruto fanfiction. Actually one-shot, but whatever. Enjoy. I guess this can be in Shippuden or before. Either one.

Itachi. How he hated that name with vengence. How he wanted to avenge his older brother for what he did to their clan. How he hated what he was going to do to gain the upper hand he desperately needed to defeat his brother.

The wind was on his side, making a loud howling noise, drowning out any involuntary sounds he might accidentally make. The leaves hid his presence as he came to the gate of a certain village. In preparation for the forboding weather, all the guards had been withdrawn to their homes.

Tch. Weaklings. Sasuke dropped down from the tree silently and took out his kunai. Fingering it, he expertly threw it at a nearby clothesline. The kunai sliced through one of the socks on the line. Smirking but still feeling a sense of dread, Sasuke moved on.

The balcony to the room was no problem for Sasuke, who scaled the walls with the precision and speed of a spider. He climbed onto the balcony and stopped concealing some of his charka. Just enough so that who he was needing to see would know but not so much that the whole village would be alerted.

The person stepped out of the room with bleary eyes and stumbled. Sasuke watched with amusement and then put his hand to his weapon.

"Sasuke?"

And it was done so much more quickly then he expected. A quick slice of the neck and it was done, but he could not wash the overwhelming feeling of betrayal off of him.

Her blood was staining his clothes and hands. Her blood was matting the pink hair she had so meticulously took care of. Her blood was on his hands.

And so it was done, and Sasuke opened his eyes to see a new kind of world. To see that betrayal was nothing and friendship was.

Was this the Mangekyo Sharingan? He could not believe what he had done, but it was for the best.

Sasuke had gained the upper hand in the battle but lost the high hand in Sakura's heart.

The Next Day

Sasuke watched from the trees with different eyes as they lowered her prone body into the coffin. He watched as the lid was closed and her face shut away from the world. He heard as his old teammate proclaimed eternal friendship. He thought as lines of Konoha citizens and shinobi came to pay their respects, and he died as they read the inscription on her gravestone.
