Smart Dog
Eddie was not as dumb as Frasier and Niles seemed to think. He was more in tuned with everyone's emotions than anyone else in the household. It was easy to see that Martin was struggling with his transition from his apartment to Frasier's. Of course, Eddie figured Frasier must have known that as well, because Frasier, himself, was struggling with the change. But, Eddie was the one to truly understand. It was not as simple as moving. It was a change of his life that Frasier didn't really seem to understand until they talked it out. Eddie wished he could talk sometimes so he could rub that in Frasier's face.
He also knew when to back off when one was frustrated. Except when it came to Frasier. He just loved messing with him too much to stop. It hadn't gotten to the point where Frasier was truly hurt, but when it came to that, Eddie would have the sense to back off. He was not cruel; he was just a fun-loving dog.
Eddie always considered himself to be smart. The smartest thing he had ever done—aside from find that really awesome doll—was realize Niles's feelings for Daphne before anyone else. He was sure he knew even before Niles came to terms with it. He could sense the attraction from the moment they met, but the sense got stronger as time went on. Eddie sensed the way Niles shifted uncomfortably, the way he looked at her. He gave off a different kind of scent the more he came over. The scent was strong, and it was always directed towards Daphne. It didn't really matter if Niles was with another woman; he never had that scent towards anyone except for Daphne.
Soon, the others began to know. Of course, they had to really study Niles's body language to know he was in love with Daphne. Eddie was proud that all it took was a simple scent for him to know. However, even with all that information, Daphne was oblivious.
He always liked to watch them when Niles came over. When he wasn't staring at Frasier, of course. Eddie was always hoping this would be the time they would finally make their moves, and the scent would stop driving him crazy with anticipation. Daphne remained oblivious, and it was frustrating.
When Niles brought that horrid woman, Mel, over, Eddie hated the scent of her. She was not the type of person she wanted in his family. He especially hated her because the same scent he sensed from Niles, he had been sensing from Daphne. He didn't know how it happened, but Eddie was glad to sense that Daphne was finally reciprocating Niles's feelings. Except that idiot Niles kept pretending he was in love with Mel, and couldn't notice what Daphne was feeling.
Imagine Eddie's pleasant surprise when everyone came back to the apartment one day, and he saw the way the two had been looking at each other. They were holding hands and being very affectionate. That was what he was waiting for all along! Now, he could get to more important tasks, like staring at and messing with Frasier. If only Eddie could talk, then he could explain all of this to Frasier and Niles. He supposed it didn't really matter because he knew he was a smart dog; maybe he was even smarter than those two eggheads.
