The Pier

For the third day in a row, Naruto walked along the grassy hill that straddled the coastline. He had no destination and no legitimate reason for being there. He had done his best to fight it, but he had to see. He had to see if that boy was still there, as he had done for three consecutive days now. The pier was old. Older than Naruto's father would have been. Perhaps even older than his grandfather. The wood was grey and weathered and patchy with black mould, but despite the frightful shrieking it would spew forth as you stepped on it, the pier was reliable and sturdy.

It drew into Naruto's sight, and sure enough, the boy was there. Seated on the edge, legs dangling, staring straight ahead at the horizon. Alone. Always alone. For the last two days Naruto had just wanted to verify for himself that the boy was still there, but this time he found his body turning and his feet leading him into a descent down the hill, across the sand and to the foot of the pier. As he placed that first foot on the rotting timber, it cried out in protest. Naruto saw the boy's head jerk at the sound, but he kept his gaze steady and did not look round.

Worried that he had startled the boy, Naruto quickened his pace until he was close enough to see the goose pimples on the boy's pale, shivering arms. Naruto knew he could sense his presence, but still those eyes stayed glued to the horizon. That endless expanse of sea that made everything seem hopeless. The boy still did not react when Naruto sat heavily beside him.

He drank in his dishevelled appearance. Those sunken cheeks and the clothes that hung off his body. He hadn't eaten since his family's tragedy. The girls of the village had predictably left bento boxes by his side, but he did not touch them. He had knocked them all into the dark, swirling waters below. The adults of the village thought it best "Not to interfere. The poor boy needs time to grieve."

His eyes. Naruto thought His eyes look dead. It was true, those black, half-lidded orbs had seen dreadful things, and now they looked at nothing in particular, not really seeing at all. Haunted eyes, devoid of the essential spark that signifies life.
"Uchi-" Naruto halted himself, not wanting to utter the family name. "Sasuke, you'll seriously die if you keep this up." Sasuke bowed his head, raven hair falling forward and veiling his face. His lips remained a tight line.
"Didn't you hear me? You're on the brink of-" Naruto could not bring himself to say it. Sasuke's head dropped a little more.
"Is that what you want?" Naruto raged, suddenly burning inside. "How can you be so damned selfish? You're such a-"

His sentence was cut short as Sasuke collapsed against his chest, eyes closed and gently snoring.
