How Can You?

SUMMARY: How can you be in love with someone and not even know their own name? The moment the words came out of her mouth, she saw the hypocrisy encased within. Kate/Ari. Some spoilers for "Bête Noire" and "Reveille". One-shot.

A/N: So I was watching reruns of "Bête Noire" and "Reveille", and, well, I've been a Kari shipper for a while, but those episodes REALLY made me see what they could have had if Ari hadn't been a terrorist. I heard Kate say this line and almost instantaneously, a plot bunny jumped into my head and would not go away. I'm writing this during English class (yay) because I'm bored out of my skull and the substitute isn't paying attention. My first NCIS fic.

"How can you be in love with someone and not even know their own name?" The moment the words came out of her mouth, she saw the hypocrisy encased within. In a weird sense, she realized that the one man she didn't even know the name of, the one who had held her and Ducky hostage, shot Gerald in the shoulder and sent him to rehab for God knows how many months, the one man she could not kill just because of the look in his eyes, had caused her to fall in love with him.

And she didn't even know his own name.

Sure, Kate thought, she had had her fair share of crushes in the past, but for goodness sake's, she wasn't DiNozzo! She was supposed to meet the man, get to know him: his like, his dislikes, his family, his job, but for some reason all this man had to do was look her in the eyes and she was hooked.

She couldn't get enough. His eyes were like heroin to her.

Of course, so many things could go wrong if she were to pursue some form of relationship. Firstly, Gibbs killing her, bringing her back to life, and killing her again. Secondly, the bastard was a terrorist who had taken her hostage and nearly killed her friends. And thirdly, well, was there even a third reason? The nameless man could use her to gain government secrets and kill some important people she was very much liked. But to her, the points were all moot because of his eyes.

Those eyes were the reason her thoughts kept creeping back to him when she least expected it, and what kept her awake many a long night. She saw them when she entered autopsy, when she entered her apartment, in her deepest darkest dreams they would be killing her, suffocating her, and in lighthearted ones she could see them on a little cherubic face that looked like a combination of the two of them, a little happy family in a house with a white picket fence and a puppy dog.

Of course, she knew that would never happen, but it was nice to dream.

Now if Kate only knew his name…

A/N 2: What do you think? Please don't bash me because I'm a Kate/Ari shipper.
