For the past month, there were dozens of reports about a man exposing himself to women in the produce sections of grocers throughout Oxford. Women were afraid to shop alone and the consumption of fruits and vegetables was down. The culprit was described as a tall man, mid-thirties, with black hair, green eyes, and a muscular build. His modus operandi was to pose as a fruit checker and then lift his apron and bare his private parts to women. He was quick on his feet and always fled the scene before help arrived. Most of his victims were over the age of 40. The criminologist assigned to assist the police theorized that he chose to prey upon older women as they were more likely to be shocked by his behavior and less likely to fight back.
Finally there was a break in the case. Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent issued a statement about the arrest that day. "The man known as the Oxford Produce Department Flasher was apprehended today when an unidentified female customer disabled and restrained him after he exposed himself to her in front of the display of bananas at a local grocer. He is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital after which he will be transferred to a detention center." A member of the press asked how it was possible for the woman, described by an eyewitness as "wee small", to have overpowered the much larger man. Superintendent Innocent replied that the local hero, who wished to remain anonymous, was an expert in the vulnerabilities of male anatomy.
Later that day, Dr. Laura Hobson was leaving work and heading to her car when Sergeant James Hathaway approached her and said, "Excuse me, Dr. Hobson; I'd like to buy you a drink." Never one to turn down a free drink, especially with the dishy sergeant, she agreed and then asked, "What's the occasion?" "I believe congratulations are in order," answered James. As she accompanied him to the bar, Laura wondered if Robbie knew too. She got her answer when they arrived and Inspector Lewis was waiting for them at a table and announced, "Hathaway is buying because I figured it out before he did."
