"Oh, come on Rainbow Dash! You try and use muscles you never even had before!"

Twilight was getting frustrated. This amused Rainbow Dash. That made Twilight more frustrated and the vicious cycle continued.

"Okay, fine." Rainbow Dash came back to the ground. She began circling the newly-made-into-an-alicorn Twilight. "We can forget actual flying for now... just keep beating those wings. Get used to how they feel. Become in control of them."

Princess Twilight Sparkle took a sigh of relief. She stared into the open air from the grassy cliff they had found for flying practice. Twilight began beating her wings, and couldn't help but think of how... alone they were up here.

"Sure. Yeah. Just keep... keep that up." Rainbow Dash was holding back a snicker, and Twilight bristled. She must have looked ridiculous. Twilight was sure beating her new wings was the same feeling for fillies and colts who hadn't developed their motor skills yet. Beating those wings felt like stretching on legs that had been asleep and felt oddly numb.

"Just remember how you felt the first time you flew. I'm sure even you had to get used to it!" The alicorn said.

Rainbow Dash walked back around Twilight. Her face closing in on hers. "Is that so?"

"Yes. It is." Twilight didn't miss a beat. She returned Rainbow Dash's hard stare.

"Because in that case, I'm sure we can bring Scootaloo up here to show you how it's done. As my other student, I'm sure she could bring you up to speed."

Twilight grinded her teeth, yet didn't give Rainbow Dash the satisfaction of a pause. "Is that why Fluttershy is still afraid of heights? Because you're such a fantastic teacher?"

Rainbow Dash inched even closer. Their breath mingled. She whispered, "then why are you here?" Their lips almost touched. Twilight racked her brain for a clever response. Her heart beat heavily in her chest. She didn't dare stop beating her wings, though. Twilight breathed "because" and moved to close the small space between them and—

"Here!" Rainbow Dash shouted and flew back around. She pushed Twilight off the cliff, whose wings were still beating.

Twilight took only a moment to adjust. She was flying but quickly sinking down below the cliff. She fought with all her strength to keep her wings beating. They were already so tired. No. She would not give Rainbow Dash the satisfaction! Twilight gave herself one more blast of motivational energy and brought her height back to where the cliff ended. Twilight saw Rainbow Dash smirk as the violet mare pushed herself to fly higher than where she had started.

Twilight let a grunt escape and she could no longer keep the look of strain off her face.

Rainbow Dash flew by her side and glided her back down into the grass.

Twilight panted, and felt her wings burn. If one more second had gone by she was sure they would have snapped off.

"You were terrible," Rainbow Dash said.

Twilight knew Rainbow Dash had really meant she was improving.

"Thanks," she whispered.

"Same time tomorrow."

"Yes, ma'am." Twilight hoped maybe next time they could close that space a little further.

I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of this. The idea had itself. I have a new flying buddy says Rainbow Dash? Of course there would be a frustrated flying lesson where they play around with personal-almost-kissing-space! I don't own the characters. Reviews are encouraged. Thank you for reading!
