"Merlin, wait up!" He could hear Gwen calling after him as he ran down the street. His feet pounded hard on the dirt as he urged himself to somehow possibly go faster. He couldn't deal with this right now. "Merlin, you know I can't run as fast as you!" He kept going, running as fast as he could towards to forest. "Merlin!"
Tears slowly obscured his vision until all he could see were the blurred images of trees all around him. He let himself collapse in the middle of the woods, finally letting out the sob that had been lodged in the back of his throat. He leaned his back up against a tree, head in his hands, weeping. He didn't know how long he was there before Gwen finally caught up.
She had stopped several feet in front of his distraught form, uncertainty gracing her face, unsure of whether to try and comfort him or not. "Merlin?"
He stared at her through his tears, motionless as she cautiously approached him.
"Merlin, what's wrong?"
He kept staring, letting a bitter smile creep across his face. "You have no idea, do you?" he whispered. She knelt down beside him, shaking her head in confusion. "Everything I do is for him, and he just thinks I'm an idiot. Then you come along, nothing special about you, and you sweep him off his feet." Her confused expression remained when he looked up at her.
"I don't under–"
"Of course you don't," Merlin snapped, cutting her off. He was suddenly on his feet, looming over her, face red and tears still pouring down. "No one does. Why would anyone pay attention to the idiot servant?" Gwen stood up and backed away from his distraught form. He in turn took a step towards her, shaking his head slowly."I saw you kiss him." Her eyes widened.
"I don't know what you're talking about," she stammered out. Her friend's face was twisted with pain; she took another step back, fear suddenly filling her as a snarl escaped from his mouth. "Mer-Merlin, you're sc-scaring me." He smirked.
"Good," he whispered. He reached out a hand and placed it under her chin, tilting her head up to look into her eyes. Merlin took a step closer as Gwen trembled. "Good."
The last thing she saw was Merlin's eyes grow gold and a bright flash of light.
Merlin stayed only long enough to watch as her body hit the forest floor before walking away.
