Dear Diary,
Today whilst working my regular hours in the king's castle a number of strange happenings did occur. Firstly, the lords were drinking happily in the name Banquo, a friend of Macbeth's (who had rudely not turned up), honour when he suddenly got up from the table and exited through a side door. However, it was left slightly ajar and so I tip-toed up to the door and peer through. Talking with the King was a man covered in blood and I heard the name Banquo mentioned, the guest that was being honoured at this feast. They also said something about Banquo's son Fleance and I have a feeling that the king may be involved in murderous deeds. If this is so I am sure that god will make him burn in the deepest regions of hell. I decided to move away from the door as I feared that if he found that I was listening I would be punished.
The second thing that happened was when the king re-entered. He went to sit down at the table but then stated that it was full. One of the important Thanes showed him a chair that was free but he began to complain that it was full and that it was cruel to play such a trick on a King. We did not know what he meant but again he began to mummer about Banquo. The lords got up, saying that the King was not well and that they should leave. Lady Macbeth then told everyone that this did sometimes happen to Macbeth and that if we kept paying attention to him it would get worse. He stopped for a while but then started again. This time Lady Macbeth led him away and whispered to him. He stopped and went to sit in his place but yet again he began to mummer about Banquo. Lady Macbeth told the lords that they should not leave in order of status but get out right away as the king was slowly becoming worse. When the lords had left she glared at me and with that I left the room, yet again fearing punishment.
I wonder if what happened today had something to do with the man covered in blood or if Macbeth is going insane with the pressure of becoming king of Scotland. I dare not tell anyone of what I saw, I doubt that I would even be believed.
