"Hey Mr. Hummel? Could I talk to for a second?" Mike asked as he walked into Hummel Tires and Lube.
Burt looked up from the car he'd been working on and focused on the kid standing in front of him. If he remembered correctly, the kid's name was Mike and he was a hell of a dancer. Kurt said Mike's a big part of why they made it to nationals in the spring. Plus, Mike was one of the only football kids who'd always been nice to his kid. But for the life of him he couldn't recall ever having a conversation with the tall, lanky kid.
"Hey, Mike, right?" Burt asked. Mike nodded, confirming his identity. "Let me just finish up here and then we can talk, okay?"
Mike simply nodded again and walked over to sit on one of the stools near Burt's workbench. Burt tightened one last screw and looked up at Mike, expectantly.
Mike smiled a tight smile and got right to the chase.
"How'd Kurt get you to love him, no matter what?"
The question threw Burt for a loop. It definitely wasn't what he'd been expecting. Hell, he doesn't even know what he'd been expecting. Last time a kid that wasn't one of his own had come to the shop had been to tell him to talk to Kurt about sex. He'd expected Mike to have something to say about Kurt but he couldn't fathom why this kid was coming to him, asking such questions. He swallowed and looked Mike directly in the eye before answering.
"Kurt never had to do anything but be himself. I promised him from the day he was born to love him. I had to work past some of my own issues when he came out, but that's never made me love him any less."
Mike nodded. A faraway look passed over his features.
"So, why are you asking?"
"Hmm? Oh, no reason. I was just curious," Mike shrugged before heading for the door. He turned around before exiting. "Thanks Mr. Hummel. I'm glad Kurt, and Finn, have got an amazing dad like you in their lives."
With that he left, leaving Burt to wonder what exactly was going on in Mike's life and vowing to never take his relationship with either of his sons for granted."
