I won't ever forget that night.
The moon was full and huge in the lake we were standing by. It's pale light and the light of the stars, strewn about the sky like silver faerie dust spilled over black velvet were the only lights we had. The dark surface of the water rippled as cherry blossoms fell lightly onto it. They hit the water and twirled lightly, then floated around slowly. The blossoms fell onto us as well, and we brushed them off our shoulders with content smiles. Tall, fragrant trees surrounded us like our own personal barrier. Except for the occasional animal that scurried by to their beds, we were totally alone. I took in a deep breath, and the night air intoxicated me.
I looked down. The ring in the little box shined with the light of the moon. It was so beautiful that night, but it would be more beautiful every day afterwards while it was being worn. I gulped, uneasy. I looked up from the ring, and a small smile on a beautiful face gave me reassurance and hope. Neither of us knew what to say or how to react. It wasn't every day that you apart of a proposal with the person you loved.
"It's beautiful."
I nodded.
"Well?"
I paused. "'Well?'"
"Shouldn't I be the one crying?" Haruhi asked flatly. At that, the tears poured out of my eyes with a long sob from somewhere deep in my throat.
She picked up the ring with what looked to be a little sigh, but I couldn't hear it over my crying. After a short examination of the pure gold band and the huge diamond, she frowned.
"What a waste of money."
"Waste?" I sobbed, my voice high. "Do you not like it?"
"Stop crying, Tamaki," she sighed again as she slipped it onto her right ring finger.
I stuck my hand out in a vain attempt to stop her. "You... put it on yourself..." I mumbled, and began to sob again. "And you put it on the wrong hand!"
I couldn't believe she had just done that! I had pictured it perfectly!
The two of us, under the full moon and stars (check). We would be standing, talking about nothing much but the scenery, and I would pull the ring out (check). She would then blush, a beautiful pale pink! Overjoyed tears would fall from her eyes as I would slip to one knee and ask for her hand!
"Oh, Tamaki-kun!" she would exclaim! She would look up at me, her eyes wide and teary and breathe a light, "it's so beautiful"!
"Not as beautiful as you," I would tell her.
She would hide her delicate face in her even smaller hands, averting my gaze because of embarrassment and say, "yes, Tamaki-kun."
The, I would put the ring on her finger, and she would slip perfectly into my arms.
Instead, I got stuck with...
"Hey!" Haruhi yelled, her hands on her hips, the ring on the left hand. "Are you even listening to me?"
"Huh?"
"I said-" she calmed down a little, and her face colored lightly. "I said, 'thank you' and..."
"And...?"
"Iloveyou," she muttered, completely red. The look on her face was one of pure hatred and regret, but I ignored that.
I smiled, almost afraid that I had heard wrong. "What? What did you say, my dear love Haruhi? You mumbled, dear."
She hit me in the nose. "I said, 'I love you!'"
"You really said it!" I exclaimed. "You really finally said it!"
"Shut up!" she yelled at me.
"One more time, one more time, one more time! Say it again, Haruhi! Please?"
"I said, 'shut up'! Don't make me take it back!" She growled, and I grabbed her into a big hug.
She pushed me. "And get off me!"
All I could do was cry and laugh as I realized how very perfectly she fit in my arms. I felt her put her hand on my back tenderly, but I never brought it up again. She would have denied it, anyway.
The End.
