James Potter and Lily Evans had been debating for more than a year. Well, not exactly debating. James was practically wheedling Lily to go out with him, and Lily was rejecting him. Every. Single. Time. No matter whatever attempts that he used to woo her, she remained unimpressed.

No matter how many gifts he bought, or how many matches he won, Lily stuck by Severus Snape's side. Until that fateful day, when Severus accidentally cut their friendship using that unforgivable word.

"Mudblood."

Lily ran away in tears of rage and sadness, and Severus was treated just like James Potter, his countless apologies ignored. But James had realized that, in order for Lily to like him he needed to be a good friend, not a bully, nor a prankster. He had to be a good friend. Both to his friends and total strangers. Maybe not the Slytherins, but Lily hated most of them anyway. Sirius and the rest of the Marauders would understand. Wouldn't they?

Lily was impressed by how quickly James Potter changed. From prankster to friend in a few days, he now went around the school with his gang of friends, helping first-year and seventh-years alike. Deciding that he really had changed from the bully he once was, she decided to go his way.

"Lily! Will you go out with me? Please?"

Potter had not changed in that sense, she thought, but otherwise he was fine. As she opened her mouth to reply, Black muttered something to him. She expected Potter to hex him, but instead he just merely shrugged.

"Yes."

Potter looked as if he had just been told that he would go to heaven. She had never seen anyone looking happier. She smiled slightly to herself as she left for class. Some things would change after all.
