Melody Pond had had better days. She realized half way to class that she'd forgotten her essay on the TARDIS, having grabbed the one she'd written on Jane Austen and feminism for her Earth university by mistake. Thankfully, she'd had her microcomputer with her, and was able to obtain another copy for the eccentric professor who much preferred the printed styles like the ancient Earth she was studying. In the library she'd gotten into an argument with one of her classmates as to what life in 21st century Earth was actually like. Never mind that she was raised in that era, for the most part anyway. She was just a snobby know-it-all to them.

And it seemed as if it was about to get worse when, in the lobby of the school of all places, she'd spotted the TARDIS parked and waiting at the bottom of the stairs. She looked around, spotted Rose, and was about to remind her of the promise they'd made not to watch her so much now that she was in her late forties and wasn't so much a child any more.

But then she noted Jenny, and her heart caught in her throat.

This was the moment, the day, that her big sorta sister joined her in school. She'd heard stories from her, not detailed because of Spoilers, but she was assured they'd become inseparable. Melody caught Rose's eye, and she almost said hello but refrained. She could see that there was no recognition in those eyes, and she was told not to say anything to them if there wasn't an instant recognition. So she waited, and watched as Jenny said goodbye to her parents, to Aunt Donna, to … Tim? Tim!? He was here? No, no, that's not right, was it? Melody honestly couldn't remember if Jenny had said anything, but Tim was around just enough when she was growing up that she supposed it made sense. But the way they interacted, how awkward he was with Jenny, how oddly un-infatuated she seemed as she hugged him, it had to be very early on.

When the other four finally left Jenny on her own, Melody ran up to her, eager for this to all start.

"Hello, Jenny," She greeted one of the most important women in her life for the hundredth or so time, but the first for the blonde. "My name is Melody Pond. Sometimes I'm known as River Song, and you and I are essentially family."

Jenny looked at her blankly. "Are you an anomaly too?" She asked.

Melody laughed. "Yep," She said with a single nod. "But not in the way you are."

"Oh," Jenny said, confusion twisting her features. "So … how are we essentially family?"

"Because my parents, and your parents, are best friends in the future. And, well, Spoilers." Melody replied as best she could.

"Spoilers?" Jenny laughed. "Well, can't have something spoil the future, can we?"

Melody shrugged a single shoulder, barely repressing the smirk. She'd gotten it from Jenny, that word. Ages and ages ago it seemed now, hearing it whispered to her as a little girl when she'd unknowningly meet herself from the future. Memories of those times were fogged, but whenever there was a question she had, Jenny would always whisper it in her ear.

"At least not yet. I think before we delve into the deep, twisted ties we have you'll want to get settled in first. Got a roommate?" Jenny shook her head. "You do now." Melody said with a coy grin, offering Jenny her arm.

She looked at the blonde beside her who took in her surroundings with innocent excitement, marveled at how it seemed the tables had turned for them, and couldn't wait for Jenny to catch up to her like she'd been promised she would.

Because now it didn't matter if she was considered a snobby know-it-all, an outsider, or just plain strange. Because Melody finally had her confidant, her best friend.

Her big sister.
