Disclamier: I own nothing! Takes place in the middle of "When Extremes Meet" Oneshot for now
"She's going to be a great Avatar you know."
"She's already a great Avatar," came his retort, harsher than I expected. I glanced at him, his eyes defensive turning confused. "Uh…sorry," he muttered, hugging me tighter against his side. "I don't know what came over me."
"Is a great Avatar," I corrected quietly. "My mistake."
For a moment all was silent except for the crashing of the waves on the island and the far off shouts of Councilman Tenzin's children playing back at the house.
Finally Mako spoke. "Listen I'm sorry okay?" he said, rubbing his forehead distractedly. "It's just that Korra's been under a lot of pressure lately and she's making herself sick stressing out about it. I'm worried about her, that's all."
I leaned against him, the gentle rise and fall of his chest from his breathing oddly comforting. "You care about her a lot, don't you?"
"What? No. I mean, yes, but, not like that, I mean…yes, I care about her." He finished in a low voice.
"Hmm." Once again silence reigned. "Sometimes I wonder if you care about her more than you care about me." My words seemed to ratchet up the tension until we were both afraid to breath for fear of disturbing each other. I could see Mako struggling to answer and waited until it was apparent no answer was forthcoming.
I turned toward him. "Because I love you Mako," I told him, my voice more serious than it'd been in years. "You're the first person who wanted me for me, and not for my family's money. And cute besides." At this the corner of his mouth quirked up and I smiled. "I just thought you should hear that."
Patting his cheek, Asami quickly kissed him then got up walking slowly back to the women's dorms. Mako watched her go, the tightness in his chest only intensifying. Great. What was he supposed to do now?
